    Quickpar

Has anyone tried to use QuickPar-0.9.1.0 in Windows 7.

I downloaded it from CNET today and installed it. When I try to check and fix par2 files, Windows tells me it was not installed properly and wants to delete the program.

I have used it on other computers with Window 7 Ultimate without any issues. I am now using Windows 7 Pro (student version).

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

Have used it and am using it. You should un-install and then re-install. You might want to run the installer as admin.

Uninstalled quickpar with Revo Uninstaller and removed everything from registry, then rebooted.

Downloaded quickpar QuickPar-0.9.1.0 from www.quickpar and installed it again. The results are the same, when I click on a par2 file windows asks if i want to run quickpar and answer yes. Then it asks if want to uninstall quickpar completely.

One good thing is I think I found a work-around by opening quickpar then add the par2 files then click Open. It does seem to check the files. I have not run into any yet that need repair, so I can't tell if the works or not.

This a PITA way to do it but until I find why it don't work the way it should I will have to use it this way.

I have had no issues. You just need to make sure to run options and set up preferences first. Once I did that it ran fine for me.

    I don't think you're using it correctly.

After launching the program, do not "add files" first.

Instead, push the OPEN button. This will present the navigation dialog to allow you to go to the folder in which your primary PAR2 and optional additional PAR2 repair files are located, along with the multiple "parts" perhaps (e.g multiple parts of a RAR file, or other data) that are described by the PAR2 files.

Then just select that one primary PAR2 file you want to use as the starting point for the whole process, and push the OPEN button. If there are additional PAR2 repair volumes they will be shown as well (since they have a PAR2 extension) but you don't care about them. They are for Quickpar to utilize, not you. Just select that first primary PAR2 file and press OPEN.

This simple one-step action then initiates the Quickpar/PAR2 checking process, including verifying that all of the "parts" identified in the PAR2 file are present or not, and telling you which ones are present (green) or not (red) or broken (orange, I think).

It will also automatically scan your folder for the additional PAR2 "repair volumes" needed to accomplish the repair (if needed). the REPAIR button will be grayed out if no repair is needed, or if insufficient repair volumes/blocks are found in that folder. But if repair is needed, and if sufficient (or more than sufficient) PAR2 volumes are available to accomplish the repair, the "ready to repair using n/m blocks" text will appear in the second status bar, and the REPAIR button will be active.

If you don't have sufficient PAR2 repair volumes it will tell you that in the status bar, telling you how many additional blocks it needs to be sufficient and actually accomplish the needed repair. The REPAIR button will be grayed out if there is not sufficient PAR2 repair volumes/blocks found than are needed.

Push the REPAIR button (if not grayed out) and it will do what it has to. The red or orange files shown in the upper part of the dialog window will change to green, indicating that all is well now.

    It works perfectly.

This also handles automatic RENAME, where the PAR2 file provides file names for the parts which differ from what's found. In this case there will be a RENAME button that appears, and the status bar text will say something like "ready to rename". Just push the RENAME button and all parts will be properly renamed to conform to the primary PAR2 file's specification.

Again, no need to ADD files when using Quickpar to check on integrity of the multiple parts. Just push OPEN on the main dialog window to get the navigation dialog window, navigate to where the parts and primary/repair PAR2 files are located, select just the primary PAR2 file, and push OPEN on the navigation dialog window.

    Works perfectly.

If you have additional "sets" (of primary PAR2, optional secondary PAR2 repair volumes in case they're needed, and the one or more "parts" to be verified/repaired/renamed by QuickPar), just repeat the entire process again after the previous one is finished. Just start again by pushing the OPEN button on the main dialog window, etc.

P.S. - I've never changed any of the setup options. The defaults that come with installation are perfectly fine. As for "file deletion" I've got all three items checked, which is the default.

The only thing I do in options is set it to auto monitor and auto repair, those items are not selected when you run Quickpar you need to check boxes in options for it to be enable automatically when you run app . After that as long as Quickpar's set associations were done properly you only need to double click a single par files (no need to run quickpar and add files at all)it will add all additional files and auto repair the files without any more actions. The only time you need to actually run Quickpar is to create par files. But the issue is not how to use it, it is whether it works on Win 7 Pro -Student Version.

I see. I'm not one to normally let programs do too many things entirely automatically and prefer to have manual control over what and when they get done... at least until I develop confidence in what exactly will happen automatically and without any manual intervention or optional control.

But in this case, I can understand exactly what's happening, and avoiding the need to even just push that REPAIR button (which is, after all, exactly what I'm about to do next anyway if there are sufficient repair volumes present, if needed) seems like a perfectly reasonable non-default option to check.

After that as long as Quickpar's set associations were done properly you only need to double click a single par files (no need to run quickpar and add files at all)it will add all additional files and auto repair the files without any more actions.
Yes, that makes sense. The above manual steps I described are actually what happens by default immediately upon double-clicking on a primary PAR2 file (already associated with Quickpar). The program gets launched with this particular primary PAR2 file as if its folder had been manually navigated to and then this file selected and the OPEN button pushed.

It's just that normally I've got my newsgroup reader (Forte Agent v6.0) open, having downloaded many RAR-parts and PAR2 primary files from binary newsgroups. I then open Quickpar and keep it open as a second window. Since the Explorer view presented from the OPEN dialog is already positioned to my last-used (and always the same) "attach" directory from Agent, I never really have to navigate anywhere else. I just need to pick the PAR2 file I want to use, and push OPEN. Back and forth, between Agent and Quickpar.

As the need to verify new binary downloads proceeds (from Agent) I'm also using Quickpar to verify and tell me if I even need to download any PAR2 repair volumes for that set of parts, and based on how many blocks I might need I know about how many PAR2 repair volumes I will need (from whatever number of such repair volumes the original newsgroup poster has provided). Once the program is opened once you might as well just leave it open, and use its own Explorer view (from its OPEN button) to select with.

But you're right... if it's not open yet, double-clicking on a primary PAR2 file from some other Explorer view will launch Quickpar and initiate all those actions automatically. I simply use Quickpar's own Explorer view (from its OPEN button) to be that Explorer view.

Just depends on which situation is at hand, and how often you're using it consecutively.

But the issue is not how to use it, it is whether it works on Win 7 Pro -Student Version.
I can't imagine there's any difference whatsoever or any licensing considerations. It's open-source and free.

I've been using it ever since win98 days, on through WinXP Pro x86, and now with Win7 Pro x64.
