Windows Explorer Replacement

I have been looking at Windows Explorer replacements and I noticed you didn't have any on your list.

The trick was finding a good free one that looks nice and works well - and has features the regular Explorer does not. I think I have found one.

It's called Explorer + + .

Explorer++ - A small and fast file manager for Windows

I like it because it has tabbed browsing. Tabs in explorer helps make navigating through lots of windows much easier and smoother.

Info:

" Explorer++ is a free multi-tab file manager for Windows. Available on Windows XP and above, it features the same familiar interface as Windows Explorer, while introducing several enhancements and improvements for a much richer file browsing experience.

Features:
  • With the option to save to the registry or a configuration file, Explorer++ is completely portable.
  • Tabbed browsing for easy management of multiple folders.
  • Display window shows previews of files as they are selected.
  • Easy-to-remember keyboard shortcuts for quick navigation.
  • Customizable user interface.
  • Full drag-and-drop support with other applications, including Windows Explorer.
  • Advanced file operations such as merging and splitting supported. "

It comes in a 32 bit and 64 bit version.

This program is now Open Source so you can expect it to be around a while with good community support.

This program is a standalone application - no install needed.

This app does not replace your existing Explorer or make changes to windows. There may be a way to integrate this into Windows so you can use it as your default Explorer. I am looking into it.

Windows 7 32 bit

It got a nice write-up here:

Open 32-Bit Windows Explorer Folder In Windows 7 64-Bit

You can always download the latest version from my site on this page:

Just scroll about half way down and you'll see the link for Half Shell

Attachment 50645
btw, I've just found out Microsoft has changed the behavior of Windows 7 64 bit since the beta in a way that kills this work-around. From what I can gather, when you launch the 32 bit shell in SysWow64, it immediately launches a 64 bit shell, then quits. Huh? Don't ask me why. But I've gotten reports Half Shell does not work in Windows Seven 64 bit retail. I've changed the documentation to label it as a Vista64 only utility.

It's a shame because it was an easy work-around that allowed many 32 bit shell extensions to work in 64 bit Windows 7.

Anyway, all I can tell you is it works on my Vista64 SP1 still.

yet another edit: I've asked a few people with Windows7 64 bit retail to try Half Shell. Some say it works perfectly, others not at all. I suspect it may be the build or some update or fix that changes if the shell launched is 32 bit or 64 bit. I guess I'll have to leave it as Vista64, may or may not work on your particular edition of Windows Seven 64 bit. Try it and see is all I know so far.
