Well I may be out of steam on this one, unless I try DLing the 9.0 demo but since I need vegas running myself I'm not going to potentially mess up my hard won 8.0 install

Sorry you guys are having so much trouble but as others have said, it will work under W7.
It sounds to me like its more of a system problem rather than Vegas.
I know its not easy but i would re install the OS.
As Ive said i have both running and other than running in compatibility mode (and i did this from the start, windows didn't force it) Ive not done any of the above messing around.
Hope you get it sorted.
Dave.
I'd have to agree, both are working fine here on mine too.
Hope you manage to sort it.
Tonight I'll check if Vegas 8.1 Pro 64 bit works with Build 7100. This is important, but not a deal-breaker for me. I currently have it running on a W2K3-64 box.
I loaded Vegas 8.1 Pro (8.1 is 64-bit and has a few tweaks vs. 8.0c) and it seems to be running fine. I threw a few clips in the timeline and noodled around with them. Seems normal to me. What I have not done yet is capture video from the camera and then render it. I've had probs in the past with 8.1 not wanting to see any camera (under W2K3_64) but not with rendering. We'll see what happens.

I'm running Win 7 build 7127 x64 and did a standard install of Sony Vegas Movie Studio 9 Platinum Pro Pack with no problems. I've tried out everything but DVD Architect and all is working fine. I didn't use compatibility mode or run the installers as Administrator.
Good Luck
There's a x64 version of Vegas Pro 9 that I use on Win7 x64 and it works flawlessly. Have you tried it?
