Installation package could not be opened

I have recently installed a new motherboard & I am in the process of reinstalling all the progams again. I am receiving the following message when I try to install most programs (Itunes & Winzip are 2 in particular) from downloads.

"This installation package could not be opened. Verify that the package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer Package"

I have tried downloading from alternative sites or earlier versions of the programs with no success

I have spent the last 4 hours searching for a solution including turning off virus protection, firewall, changing user account controls.

In searching for a solution this seems to be a very common problem with no one solution to fix all.

I had the same problen with adobe reader & was able to locate the same download on another drive and it installed fine.

It seems that this may be related to a reinstall of Windows as this problem did not occur in the original install of windows

I hope someone may be able to help as I have several other programs to install

    Regards Bruce

This error message is usually seen with a corrupt download, the solution to which is to go to the original download site and try again. You said you went to alternate sites for the download. Have you tried going to the manufactuter websites (iTunes and WinZip)

If the files you are using to install have previously worked, then might I suggest you run a disk check (the corruption of the files could be a bad disk), and to run a full virus/malware scan, as some viruses are known to hook into the windows installer process in an attempt to lock into new software being installed...

Try giving yourself full permissions on the program install files.

    Take Ownership Shortcut

Or it could be an outdated MS installer. Have you run a full windows update after installation? If not, update, then try to install the programs.

Just, FYI there used to be a windows installer bug in win7 beta, which was fixed. See this page.

Copy the installation files to your desktop and try to install it.. if you are able to install it from your desktop, this could be a permission problem.

You need to reset the permission for the entire drive or the folder to recover from that..

    Hi
Thank you for your responses. I have tried downloading from the manufacturers site with no sucess & I have run a full virus/malware scan & a check disk so I do not think that is where the problem is.
I will try the ownership suggestion. & see how that goes. I have run a full update after reinstalling windows.
I will copy the files to the desktop & give that a whirl. I will let you know the outcome.
Again thanks for your help & suggestions
    Regards Bruce
