Unable to disable audio for HDMI in playback devices panel

I am using HDMI to connect from my laptop to a tv, but it is late and I have a roommate so I want to use headphones for the sound. I plug in the headphones, and go to the playback devices panel. It has an option to disable the tv sound, but it does not work. No error or anything, just does nothing. How do I get this to work?

I have tried enabling the speakers, I have tried setting the speakers as the default device, and I have tried disabling the TV output. None of these work, the TV stays set as the default device.

What are you using to try to disable the sound via the HDMI? You'd need to enter the graphics card software to do that as that is where the sound to the TV would be coming from, the sound for the headphones would be coming from the onboard sound/sound card which is controlled by the audio device manager.

This is the window I am using. I am wanting to switch from the TV to the speakers while keeping the HDMI to the TV plugged in.
