Audio problem in W7 (no sound)

Hello,

Two hours ago I plugged a sound wire from the PC to my LCD TV.
And after I unplagged it I had some problems in my PC, I dont know why.. so I restarted. After the restart I had an icon of a speaker with a red "X" next to it..
It sais " Audio output device is not installed"
I dont know how that could happen.. I didn't change anything in the properties or something like that.. Just plugged a wire that splits to red and white to my LCD TV.

When I try to watch a movie or listen to music in Windows Media Player, it sais it can't play because I have no sound intalled.

I downloaded a sound driver for my motherboard and it didn't help

I even tried to restore to 12 hours back, and it didn't help either.

Please help me, I am hopeless..

Could something have gotten bumped a bit? Open up the case, and make sure all components, particularly the sound card, are seated firmly. It may help to unplug/disconnect them and plug them back in.

Another place to go to is in the Control Panel>Playback tab to configure the output. If Windows refreshed itself to the default speakers the sound mixer would reflect that and see the output disabled.

Typically you run into this type of problem with usb headsets as well where you then have to set them as the default in order to hear sound and not end up with it still coming from the speakers.

I dont think the problem is in the settings.
I have two operation systems (XP and W7), the problem happened in W7 so I switched to XP.. everything looks fine in XP, I can control the speaker volume and open Windows Media Player..
But when I play a song or a movie, I still can't hear them..
(I forgot to tell that when the speakers are plugged in they make a static like sound.. after the problem..)
I can hear the song in very very low volume.. actually I can't really hear it, but I can tell something is playing..

I tried plugging to the green port,black port and orange port, non of them works... And I tried with my headphones as well..

Jonathan, I dont think I have a sound card, isn't it built on the motherboard?

I dont have the red "X" near the speaker's icon anymore..
But my headphones and speakers make a horrible noisy sound..
I played a song and I really can hear it when I hear on maximum volume.. but the statitc sound or whatever that is, is so noisy..
What can it be?

The sound mixer most likely. You can have the volume all the way up and all you will hear is static unless the signal is turned up as well. Sounds like something is still disabled there in the mixer like Auxillery.

I dont think it's something in the settings, I guess something messed up in the sound card it self..
The sound isn't really static, it's a very noisy sound, like small pops.. hard to explain..
It happens with my headphones too.
When I plug my speakers to the green plug, the speakers make a loud noise like small quick pops, a bit like a static sound.. when I raise the volume to max, I can hear a game or a song or whatever.. but the pops are so loud..
When I plug it to the orange plug, I dont hear anything (I heared when I plugged my speakers there before the problem..)

Mabey something broke inside my PC?
I think that is the most weird problem I ever saw.. (or heared..)

When plugging speakers in while powered up you will always tend to hear something right off namely the instant contact with the live signal which tends to overload for a brief second the processing of the signal suddenly being input. This is seen with any type of audio input into amplification.

The second orange jack will depend on the speaker settings more then anything if the jack is in good shape. There's no signal being sent out if the sound mixer/speaker settings are set for headphones or stereo. When switching to 2 1/2, 4, 5.1, or 7.1 surround then you should hear something maybe not as loud from the rear or center mix jack.

Night Hawk, I know..
But the sounds I got arn't normal.. I never had them..

Now I started my PC, and there are no loud noises, but if I play a song, I hear it, but again.. it sounds like in very low volume.. althou the sound is on max.

Well you mentioned pressing "something" and then the sound started working which makes you wonder if a connection problem is present but being picked up more while booted in 7. That's when you saw the X disappear there.

The swap between speakers and then headphones would seem to point at a problem on the board possibly a contact arcing or a cold solder point picking up some IF which would account for the popping sounds you heard. When first starting up everything still needs to warm up where a cold solder point wouldn't have pushed anything away from the board until later.

You may have to consider a separate sound card if the onboard is the source. The mixer and volume controls are strictly software there depending on the hardware side.

A lot of the recent machines, both laptop and desktop have multi-purpose audio ports. One thing I do now is take a stereo cord with a 3.5mm end (like headphones) and spray the metal end with a little contact cleaner then work it in and out of all the audio jacks. This helped my Gigabyte mainboard when putting this machine together, was getting erratic behavior before that.

The first thing to note is hearing sound when booting into XP right away which shows you booted into the older version when? after the audio cord was plugged not while booted in XP. You did plug it in while booted in 7 however and while the system was powered up.
You never explained what you pressed on which sounds like the plug on the end of the cord being used.

As far as the board that would be a contact inside the audio stretched or a possible component lead soldered onto the board suddenly seeing a loose solder point. That's where some lead of a component and even the small amount of solder lifts away from the board itself even in a very tiny gap to break the connection and continiuty. But if you have booted into XP since and still have normal sound something like that would be ruled out.

You mentioned downloading another driver when that shouldn't have been necessary if you already had normal sound prior to plugging in the cord. One place to look would be the Sound, Video, abd game controllers section in the device manager just as a thought to see if any items are now yellow marked.

The process of elimination in case this and hopefully will turn out to be strictly software related as far as 7 is concerned since you are getting sound in XP. Likely it will turn out to be something small like a driver knocked out or made inactive somehow.

I get what you say in parts, but can't really figure it out..

I dont get sound, not in W7 and not in XP.
In both operation systems I get a very low volume sound, and not a clear one..
I dont think it has something to do with the W7 settings as you said to go to "Sound, Video, abd game".

You never explained what you pressed on which sounds like the plug on the end of the cord being used.

I dont press anything.. just play a song or a movie, and can't really hear it.. very unclear and low sound.

You mentioned earlier about pressing "some connection inside"? and then noticed the X was gone. Do you recall what you pressed while inside the case like a wire leading over to the optical drive or something going to the board directly?

This is what tends to point at that being a likely source of the low volume as well as previous noises being heard if you have only a partial connection. A single strand of wire making contact or perhaps one of the other possible items like either a cold solder point or bent contact inside the audio jack there.

Something barely making contact wouldn't allow enough current or signal strength resulting in a low volume as well those noises you had been hearing. If something is touching a ground source like a loose strand of wire that would pull things down as well.

Before you had mentioned having sound in XP but not 7 which would point at a software/driver type problem. But with both running into the same a close inspection and retracing of the steps you have taken there so far may reveal where the problem is.

I pressed some connections close to the audio jacks from inside the case.
I pressed them because mabey they got loose or something..

I didn't say I have sound on XP but not in W7, I meant that when the problem just started, I thought it's just something in W7, so I switched to XP, and saw that I dont have a red "X" near the speaker or something like that, and I could even go to "Windows Movie Maker" and play something in there (but with no sound.. in W7 I couldnt even enter WMK).

Is there something else you need to know? or I didn't say enough about something?

movie-no audio

Hello!

I want to watch a movie on the HDTV from my laptop by connecting them together. I have a VGA cable and port for video connections however I receive no audio using the rca cable plugging it to the headphone jack.

I tried changing the default on 'sounds and devices'. doesnt work.

ive recently upgraded to windows 7 but i used to use vista and it worked perfectly.

can someone explain this to me? I cannot use the HDMI cable simply bcause my laptop doesnt have the port.

As far as you pressing on things when inside the case that caused the thought of a possible cold solder point or loose contact when you suddenly saw the X disappear. Continuity was established with the loose contact or broken solder then making contact.The odd loud noises would be from the arcing of live current despite how small that is you then take a distorted signal and amplify it through the tv or your speakers becoming loud.

To really know for a certainty on that however you would have to get in there and possibly remove the board to go over it completely on top and bottom around the jacks closely examining the contact points on the bottom with a magnifying glass even to see if any of those points had lifted away slightly from the board. Typically all the solder points from the different jacks are grouped together on the underside.

If this is from a contact inside the jack being used... ouch! The only real way to solve this seems to be adding a separate card in especially if one of those problems are found. An experienced assembler could take care of a cold solder point however while a bad jack?

If this is a new board just in an rma would take care of the hardware side with a replacement. But for a board past dealer return/exchange you will likely end up having to go for the separate sound card.

Was it bad that I pressed the cable slots on the board (connections)?

What is a cold solder? I know what solder is, but what does it mean?

The "X" didn't suddenly disappear, I went to sleep at the night it happend, woke up in the morning and saw there is no "X".. a night after that I went to sleep again, woke up and heared a fainted voice, and without load noises.. and then nothing changed..
