Playing video files causes audio to skip when connected to TV via HDMI

I usually connect my laptop to my tv to watch video files in VLC. Recently, I have been noticing when I connect my laptop to my TV and play these video files, the audio skips so much that the video is unwatchable. This happens with every video I try to open (mostly MKV and AVI files). However, when I play these video files without the computer connected to the TV, they work fine. Could the problem be my TV or my HDMI cable?

In VLC, set a delay between audio or video, or for the mkv's you can demux and adjust them. First, I would update your drivers, is this a laptop or desktop?

It's a laptop and I believe my drivers are up to date.

Try setting a delay. Can you download MediaInfo and post a screenshot from it for the media files?
