No drivers for SoundMax AD1888. Hi everyone
I've been trying for a long time to install the drivers for the sound of my ASUS P5VD1-X, that uses the SoundMax AD1888 chipset with no success. I found many solutions for Windows Vista in the web, but no one worked for me. I'm using the build 6801 64 bit. BTW, the Asus site doesn't provides the drivers for Vista, only for XP, 32 or 64 bit. If anyone knows a hack to install XP drivers in the Windows 7 64 bit I would be very glad to know.
Thanks in advance

Yes, I read it and also didn´t work. Actually, the solution found by the user of that forum was purchase another sound card, and I´m not going to do this. I also tried the RealTek AC´97 driver but it only says "Windows x64 driver ( rtkvac64.sys ) not found". I think that most of these problems are related to the (very poor) x64 support of the sound chipset manufacturer. Next time I´ll be more carefull to select a better supported motherboard. This PC will be only for the Linux now (or the old x86 OS´s). | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Black Box OS Windows 7 Build 6801 64 bit / Xubuntu Linux 8.04 LTS CPU Pentium 4 2.8 GHz LGA 775 Motherboard Asus P5VD1-X Memory 512 MB DDR Graphics Card Geforce 7200 GS Sound Card SounMax AD1888, when the drivers become usefull Monitor(s) Displays Philips 15" Screen Resolution 1024x768 Keyboard ABNT-2 Hard Drives 250GB SATA Internet Speed Brasil Telecom 500kbps |

Yes, I did it!
Well, after some work and lucky I got the sound working. I got the driver from here but this driver didn´t worked in the first time I installed it. In the second attempt it did work. What changed from the first to the second is because I installed the RealTek AC´97 drivers before and I launched the setup.exe in the compatibility mode with Windows XP. Anyway, this driver may break the boot-up, so I have boot in safety mode and remove it. That is annoying, but the sound working after almost 20 days of silence is good enought to me. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Black Box OS Windows 7 Build 6801 64 bit / Xubuntu Linux 8.04 LTS CPU Pentium 4 2.8 GHz LGA 775 Motherboard Asus P5VD1-X Memory 512 MB DDR Graphics Card Geforce 7200 GS Sound Card SounMax AD1888, when the drivers become usefull Monitor(s) Displays Philips 15" Screen Resolution 1024x768 Keyboard ABNT-2 Hard Drives 250GB SATA Internet Speed Brasil Telecom 500kbps |

Append to my last post.
When I boot up with this sound driver installed, I get a black screen, just after inserting the password and logging in. The solution was restart to the safety mode, remove the driver, boot up again and install back the driver. I know, that was annoying until today when I found that, when you get the black screen after the login, if you click around in the dark, it will show up a error message box (I can´t remember the message in it, I think it was something like "DSound UP not succeeded" or something like that). Click OK in the Message Box and the boot will resume normally. BTW, this error looks very bad since I can play Need for Speed Underground and music in the Windows Media Player normally, but the Flight Simulator X will be quiet . I still think that this driver is too buggy to be used in Windows 7, but it looks the best option to get, at least, some whispering from the PC. If anyone has a better solution, plz, tell me.

I had same problem with AD1888 but in 32 bit Win 7 (7000). Windows 7 installed driver for Soundmax and even updated it, but it didn't work at all. The problem was in driver number - 5.12.01.5290. I just replaced one file (smwdm.sys) from Asus Win XP driver pack for this card (5.12.01.3665) and rebooted the system. So I have sound now. | My System Specs | | |
