Windows 7: Creative SB 5.1 VX device problems

I have installed and reinstalled the driver for this soundcard. The issue is that while the drivers have installed (per device manager), I am unable to to open any of the Audio Control Panels. When I try and open either (Creative or Windows) it says the device is not installed. Again the device manager shows everything being OK.

The issue has only come to a head as other programs I use on the server look for local sound devices. (iTunes, replay AV)

After mucking around with it I have had the thought that my problem might stem from the fact that all installs were done through Remote Desktop as I use it as a server with no assoc. screen or keyboard. If I open up "Sound" the only playback devices shown are "Remote Audio".

Does anyone know whether I am on the right thing? ie if I (through local access) install the drivers, etc it will then show all the other devices (twin speakers ~ I assume).

Or am I wasting my time?
