How to apply Effect in Realtime?

I want to apply a vst effect in realtime.
does someone know how i can process an audiosource which is generated on my pc in realtime... so that i do not hear the original sound... only the processed sound.

just for example... the "system sounds" which show up in my Volume mixer (Soundblaster X-Fi)

I have a SoundBlaster Xfi model that has a "Creative Audio Control Panel" that allows selection of Entertainment Mode/Game Mode/Audio Creation Mode. In the Entertainment Mode I can select EAX Effects, which include reverb and several others. This was part of the application software that came with the sound card.

I don't know how you would do that without a program that uses VST plug-ins, such as Sonar (what I use for my recording DAW software). I have a lot of VST plug-ins but I can't run a VST plug in by itself, it needs a host program such as Sonar.

thanks Firebird,
...I know about the EAX Effects... but I need to use a specific VST effect.
And I know I can't use such an effect just by itself without a host application.

my problem is: how do I mute the source sound (keep it from being played through the speakers) but at the same time apply the effect and hear the processed sound in realtime.
the normal way would be >record it >apply the effect> render it> save it> listren... but i need to skip the recording part and listen to the results i realtime. any ideas?
for example: play a movie in mediaplayer and and somehow manage it that you hear only the processed sound while the movie is playiing. if you know how to do that in sonar, please let me know... i think if i get a hint that points me in the right direction i might figure out the rest by myself.

what vst are you using, and is it standalone? normally there are wet and dry levels to do just what you are trying to acheive.

thank you for the answer
if you could give me just one example how to do this...... ; )

it is not about a specific vst plugin. the wet/dry switch is usually in the host application if it's not a standalone - i know about that...

i'm stuck because the sound that i want to process is produced "outside" of the host application.

again, just for example:
- lets say i watch a videoclip in quicktime player and i want to apply an effect to the sound of the clip in realtime while i watch it.
- if i open the mixer in the windows tray i can see that quicktime has it's own volume fader once it's running... and i can manually set the volume with it or mute it.
- so how do i get this signal through the vst effect and hear the processed version in realtime and at the same time make sure that i do not hear the unprocessed sound?
- the only way i can think of right now to make sure i do not hear the original is to either turn down the volume or mute it. but how does the signal get to the vst then?

another possibility which would work for me, would be to process just everything... not only a specific application. so if i could route the "what you hear" and listen only to the processed signal that would be fine.

so if you can give me any simple example i would be really happy
