found this on the asus forum

I did tried the AC97 thing and it didnt work unfortunatly.
After a couple days of banging my head against the machine, I gave up and called ASUS support.

First you need to do the following:
Ensure you have the HD Audio plugged into your mobo

    1. Uninstall Current driver and delete driver files.
    2. Restart windows
    3. download the latest VIA chipset audio drivers here
    4. Install the Audio Driver
    5. Shut the PC Down
    6. Unplug all devices and power from computer
    7. Remove CMOS battery
    8. Wait 5 min
    9. Push power button a couple times to ensure all power is gone.
    10. Put the battery back in
    11. Start up the PC press F2 for defaults on the bios load screen.
    12. Load into windows... Walla! Hopefully that fixed you up as it did me.

    3. download the latest VIA chipset audio drivers here (click on the chipset link)
