Speaker icon missing Windows 7

The last couple of times I have started my computer (Windows 7) my speaker icon has been missing on the tool bar. Some times it will come back after I restart the computer. I tried right clicking on the time at the bottom and went to properties. The volume is set to off but is gray and I can not change it. I need some help.

Also, i'd download the latest drivers for your Audio card and see if that has any effect.

Apologies for the vagueness, i'm just off to bed

Guessing

Open your control panel, open your sound card panel, and check to see if you have a device set as default.
