Sony Vaio, No Sound, No Sound Card Detected, Windows Vista and Windows

Hi, I desperately need help with the following issue.

Well I just purchased a Sony Vaio VGN-Z790J and it had Windows 7 preloaded on it and the audio symbol in the system tray had a red cross and I couldn't locate the sound card in Device Manager. I have tried everything possible, re-installing the specifed drivers from the Sony Website, div x diagnostic, device manager and still the Sound Card is not being detected and there is still an audio symbol with a red-cross in it.

After spending endless hours to find a solution on the web, I decided to use the Windows Vista recovery discs to return the notebook back to its factory conditions. It took 4 hours and still there is no audio and the sound card is not being detected. I ended up calling Sony to seek some assistance but they were no help and they suggested to book it in for repairs. However, since there is no waranty left, I can't afford to do this. Furthermore, I have also enquired about a new mother board and i was quoted $700-$800 - once again I can't afford this.

Can you guys suggest anything, or has anyone had a similar issue that they were able to solve. I really need help and assistance would be much appreciated.Thanks.

By the way now the system has Windows 7 64 bit.

    Welcome to SF, kom01.

Did you install the latest audio driver?

You may also want to flash your bios

Thanks so much for your time and effort. I have downloaded all the latest drivers and still there is no sound. I also attempted to update the bios with the link you have provided, however a message popped up saying that my bios is up to date.

Do you have any other suggestions? I have explored other options such as trying to get it repaired (that is, if there is a fault with the sound card) but it costs $75 for a technician to have a look at it and then they charge $50 per 15 mins. I really do not want to resort to this. Another option is to get a external (express card) Creative Sound Card. However, the downside to this is that i will not be able to use my internal speakers and that it will add some bulk to the notebook.

Please can someone try find a solution for me.

    Hi Thanks again for the reply. I have tried doing what you said and downloaded the chipset software that was out of date. However, i got the following error message in relation to the sound device of the system;

Audio Driver for Intel Desktop Board
Product Detected Realtek High Definition Audio Current Driver Installed 6.0.1.6235 This device is unknown or unsupported. Please contact the manufacturer for possible updates. More information>>

So I don't know what else to do. On the intel website it said that i could try to disable the soundcard via the bios, and then re-install windows to see if that works. However, my bios is very basic and doesn't allow me to do such a thing.

So do you have any other suggestions? Also, forgot to mention, I opened up the notebook and everything seems fine with the sound card. So on one side I believe that this issue is driver related, however on the other side I believe that it could be a fault with the sound card, because even after I used the recovery discs to return the notebook to factory settings it didn't solve the sound issue.

Once again, thanks for your time and effort.

Hi Guess what? I started my notebook today and the realteck hd audio automatically installed itself and the sound began to work. Thanks very much for your help and I am so happy that I didn't have to resort to an external sound card. Thanks

Hi Lemur, I have another problem.

My sound is gone again, however the audio drivers are currently installed and the sound card is being detected, but there is no sound from the internal speakers of the laptop.

The way it happened, is that the internal speakers began to crackle and then they stopped working. The sound mixer looks like it is identifying a sound being played, however I can't hear anything.

What do you think it is? Do you think that the speakers are faulty?

I think I have the same problem

My Vaio laptop is less than 3 months old. It's a VPCSB model. On Friday evening when I shut it down, everything was working fine. When I switched it on on Saturday afternoon, there was a red cross by the speaker icon in the bottom right hand corner. I've followed all the advice provided above, been through the Sony support site to download the latest drivers and even briefly opened up the back of my computer before I got scared and closed it again. Nothing has had any effect and the problem persists.

The issue is that I'm not sure whether this is a hardware or a software issue. In the Device Manager, the only device listed under "Sound, Video and Game Controllers" is the Intel (R) Display Audio. If this isn't my sound card/processor then this is probably a hardware problem isn't it? In case it is my sound card/processor, I've been to the Intel site you recommended to install the latest drivers, but when I run the automatic driver update facility, it tells me that I have none of the drivers listed.

I would hugely appreciate any help you can provide. And if I should just buy a Mac next time, that would be useful to know too.

    Thanks,

    Guy
