No sound in Headphone/HD audio/HP pavilion

Hi guys,
I can't have sound in my headphone in the notebook anymore.

I don't know what to do more! I spent the last whole two days reading about it and doing testings. I've seen also that there are at least 6 threats about it here in the forum. I read them all, but until now I couldn't get this fixed. I think generally is the same problem with some slightly different details.

I'm using windows 7 ultimate, 64x, and the basic information about my notebook is:
HP Pavilion dv9670em
Here is the HP website page with the drivers:
Software & Driver Downloads HP Pavilion dv9670em Notebook PC - HP Customer Care (United States - English)

So, to start its not a problem in the headphone and I think neither with the hardware device, since I have been using it normally a week ago. And all the times I had to format the computer I never had this issue.

Now I have formated my notebook as usually and used the same drivers as usually. And there is this problem. I have even reformated the laptop again 2 times just to be sure there was something wrong with the drivers.

The situation just after formating is:
- Playback device with: Speakers, Headphone (as default) and Realtek Digital output.
- The computer is mute. When put the Speakers as default, then the speakers work. But in both case, theres no sign when plugin or unplugin the headphone, in neither of the 2 inputs (my laptop has 3 holes: left is mic, center and right is headphone).

Then, I have installed what I think is the most recent driver for Realtek, (R2.54). Available in the fabricant website:
Realtek
And here (page in french):
Drivers Realtek Pilote High Definition Audio R2.16 WHQL

When I install the driver is even worse! Because then the Headphone disapear from the playback device list. And the speakers don't work anymore.

So, from now I have uninstalled the Realtek drivers and seems that windows install as generic HD audio driver, what leads to the first situation in the playback devices list (speakers, headphone and digital output).

I would think then that my hard has a problem, but since nothing happened and the problem appeared after formating I think shouldnt be it.

Please, guys, I would really appreciate if you could help me with it.

Best regards.
Miro Soares

I have a similar issue with only USB headphones in my lappy! I have to go into control panel--> Sound and set the USB headphones as default each time I try to use them.

Are your headphones USB??? You didnt mention name or model of headphones...

Hi Darryl,
Thanks for the reply.
Sorry, It's true that I forgot to mention: so, it's a jack input for both mic and headphone.
And by tha way, when I go to control panel > display device > and put the headphone as default it doesn't work, and even worse the speaker also doesn't work.

Click start > go to help and support > type "I can't hear any sound from my computer" > click the "I can't hear any sound from my computer" link > you will get a link "Click to open the Playing Audio troubleshooter." It will apply a patch and fix it.

And never auto update HP's sound driver via Windows "optional updates"

Hi Abhishek,
Thanks for the reply with the tip. I've tried, but unfortunately the Audio troubleshooter couldn't identify any problem :-(

So, just to let you guys to know. It has to be a problem with the hardware:
Two weeks ago I had a problem with the graphic card (for the second time, unfortunately very common problem in these HP Pavilion). Then I took the pc to repair. So, even though the "guy" didn't changes anything on it, I think there was something wrong. Yesterday I went to the guy again and he said he opened the pc and took the part with the jack to test and then put it again in the pc and it worked. Without changing anything. So, very strange, maybe a misconnection or something.
At least I'm very glad to have this fixed.
Thanks for the help anyway!
Best.
Miro

If he got it to work at the shop, perhaps it is your headphones, or was he using yours?

Can you try a different set of headphones/earbuds? Or perhaps try a set of powered PC speakers in that to rule out the jack itself and possibly your headphones?

As for the drivers, it sucks that the "great" HP hasnt posted Windows 7 drivers for your laptop. So I'd start with the Vista drivers they have on their website, then reboot and perform a Windows Update to loacate any newer drivers.

Hi,
Thanks for the reply.

No, the problem was not the headphone, I've try several diferent ones before. The thing is that the device was not able to identify when a headphone was plug in ou plug out. The only thing I know is that the guy did was open the pc and took the part with the jack to test and then put it again in the pc and it worked. Without changing anything.
Best regards.

Taking the headphone jack out of a laptop to test it then put it back? I doubt he did that as you nearly have to disassemble most lappys to do this! I'd call him and ask him exactely what he did to test it? Sounds fishy to me...
