I have both Jensen and Altec Lansing. I prefer the sound that Jensen puts out on my Windows 7. Altec has taken the back seat to my XP. These are both Desktop computers.
My laptop has another USB speaker.
BTW... I have a Bose Wave Radio/CD player. I love the sound (especially the base that comes through)

The BOSE wave radio is actually not all that bad from the sound department...considering it's size. However, the fact that it's $500 is atrocious for a small little desktop setup. You can get the Cambridge Soundworks i755 for 1/2 the price (or less) which will perform as well if not better. Or, if you were able to spend $500 and had room for something larger than the BOSE, the sound quality could really be improved. For example, the Denon DM38 Mini Stereo Sound System

Yes, the price is "atrocious", as you say pparks1 ... but my husband bought it for me and I'm very happy that he did. Bose can sound ok under certain conditions... the problem I have with them is that... they are not really accurate. A grouping of small speakers needs to be electronically "enhanced' to come up with a full frequency response and this makes extended listening sessions very difficult for me.

When you want a small but accurate system the Gallo's are 10 times better than Bose but you will still need electronics to run them which is good as you can choose the make and model that serves you best. I was going to get a pair of the Companion 3's but didn't like the sound stage. They sounded fine sitting in front of them, but once I move around, they started to sound flat. But again, that's me, others swear by them.
I would suggest you do just what you did..... listen to the speakers yourself before buying them. One man's garbage is another man's treasure.
In the end you'll be the one stuck with the speakers, not us!
