Midi issues, Win 7, 64 bit.

    Hi.

I am running Windows 7 professional, 64 bit, and trying to connect to a Roland Piano using midi. It does not work.

It’s not the piano in any way, I’m sure of this – latest, 64 bit Win 7 drivers, and other midi instruments tried.

It is not the program, I have tried a win 7 64 bit compatible program (Sibelius First) to talk to the piano, as well as Midi-ox. Neither work.

All drivers are correct I believe, including the driver on the piano. I don’t think it is the lead, as I have used two different types of lead at separate times, i.e., a USB A-B lead and a EMU USB midi 1 x 1 lead. All drivers correct, Win 7 64 bit.

I don’t think it is some kind of voltages output on the USB sockets, as I have tried all three USB sockets on the laptop. And no USB problems with anything else, so I don’t buy this excuse.

So, in summary, I start with laptop and the Roland piano on. I insert the USB A-B lead into the laptop, and it says on the piano screen ‘USB connected’. After starting Sibelius First, I go to ‘File/Preferences/input devices, and both the Roland digital piano and/or Emu 1x1 are visible. At the instant I check the ‘use’ tick box, the ‘40201, undefined external error MMSYSTEM/IN’. Error comes up. And it is the same whether I try to use the USB A-B lead or the Emu 1x1midi lead.

There are no errors visible in device manager. Under ‘Sound video and game controllers’, I have EMU XMidi1x1, Roland digital piano, High definition audio device, IDT high definition audio CODEC. All 4 are healthy looking.
But if I Go to ‘Start’ and click ‘Control panel’ and open Sound, and then if I go to under Playback, and right click on the blank space and select “Show disabled devices”, there are no other disabled devices visible. Just: ‘Speakers/ headphones, IDT high definition audio CODEC’ as the default device and ‘Independent (RTC) Headphones, IDT high definition audio CODEC not plugged in’, and ‘Digital Audio HDMI, not plugged in’.

I now believe that the problem is with Win 7 64 bit. Any ideas anyone?

Am I going to cure this, or is there something fundamentally wrong with Win 7 64 bit?

Would it, for some weird reason, be more likely to work on a desktop with another physical configuration, perhaps Is it worth re-installing Windows 7?

And are Macs better from a midi point of view?

Thanks in advance for any help, views, or ideas.

What model Dell do you have? You didn't fill in much in the System Specs.

I did a google search and your post on the other forum is the only thing that shows up for this error. I have a recording studio using Sonar and have a USB MIDI keyboard but I have only used it with Sonar MIDI synths and with Band in a Box.

If you are using a Roland driver, verify that it is Windows 7 64 bit compatible. If not, you should install it in a compatibility mode for whatever the software is compatible with (e.g. Windows XP) and see if that helps.

If you just connect the keyboard and then go to the Device Manager is the keyboard listed? (with or without an error).

Finally, have you tried it on different USB ports on the Laptop? Some laptops have some USB ports with more "power" (like for charging an iPod) and if yours has this use one of those ports.

Judging from comments on a couple other recording forums I visit the Mac's don't fair any better than a Microsoft OS PC in many areas.

Win7 64bit Roland USB Midi Driver

I went to End User License Agreement | Roland U.S. ,
downloaded the driver for a completely different Roland keyboard and could then use Roland FP-5 within Sibelius 7 and Cubase 6.5 as a midi device
