No sound on Dell laptop Hi all:
After searching through the "no sound" threads on this forum, I haven't found an answer to my problem. My Dell Studio 1745 laptop will not make a sound in windows but works great in linux.
In "services.msc" all the audio services are set to manual or automatic, device manager shows the audio devices working properly, and yet I get the message "no device present". This happened after upgrading to windows 7 from XP.
How do I get windows 7 to recognize my audio device? It uses an 82801I Intel controller.
Thanks, Tom | My System Specs |

If you upgraded to Win 7 from XP, you need DELL Win 7 sound drivers. The XP are not compatible.
Dell has Vista/Win 7 drivers for the IDT Sound HERE Also, keep in mind the correct and required install sequence for a Dell (1) Install Windows (2) Install Dell Laptop System Software (3) Install motherboard chipset drivers (4) Install device drivers including Video, Dell Sound Drivers, Ethernet, etc. The "Dell Sound Drivers" are in bold letters as we have found, on the Dell forum, that non Dell drivers in most cases either do not work or do not work correctly.
If you still can't get it going, the best option is to post on the Dell users forum Laptop section so those familiar with the PC can help you get it going. The driver, which I have reloaded several times, was the one included in Dell's driver CD. The message from "control center > sound" is "No device installed". The sound system works fine in Linux, why not windows?
I've checked the BIOS settings, startup & services, and troubleshooter with no results.
Do I need to downgrade to Windows XP? Never had sound trouble with it on previous computer. What else is there to check?

If you loaded the drivers from your original Dell Driver CD, then you loaded ( or attempted to ) the Windows XP drivers ... You MUST download the Windows 7 drivers from Dells website .... | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number ASUSTeK Computer INC. I obtained the Windows 7 (NOT XP) media from Dell and installed it (several times) but it still doesn't work.
Any other suggestions?

Hi, linxt!
Sorry to say, really, but since you have the Win 7 install discs, back up your data and perform a reinstall. Barring that, have you already tried a repair install? | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Toshiba L355D OS Windows 7 Ultimate x64 SP1 CPU Core2 Duo Motherboard Intel Memory 4 GB Graphics Card GM965 on-board Sound Card RealTek on-board Monitor(s) Displays 19"+17"(laptop) Screen Resolution 1440x900 (x 2) PSU N/A Case N/A Cooling N/A Hard Drives 500GB Ext. 200GB Internal |

This is the first I've heard this and I do a lot of support on the Dell forum (I have over 34,000 posts on there).
Dell will supply REPLACEMENT discs on request but it's not a free service there is a minimal charge for replacements. Having a Dell "drivers and utilities" disc is not a requirement as everything that is on this disc is available, free, on their downloads. | My System Specs | | Computer type PC/Desktop System Manufacturer/Model Number My Own Build OS Windows 7, 64 bit Home SP1, Win 8 Pro 64 bit CPU Intel i7 3770 Motherboard Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UD5H Memory 16GB GSkill Ripsaw F3-14900CL9Q-16GBXL Graphics Card Sapphire HD7770 Sound Card RealTek Monitor(s) Displays Viewsonic VA2448 Series 24" LED Screen Resolution 1920X1080 Keyboard Kensington wired Mouse Logitech Wireless PSU Antec High Current Gamer HCG-620M Modular Case Coolermaster HAF XM Cooling Corsair H80 Liquid cooling with aftermarket Nexus quiet fans Hard Drives 240GB Intel 520 SSD for Win 7
