    Hi p5,

Over the course of that Vista/Realtek/Auto Update nightmare I tried drivers from all sources, the Realtek site, the Dell site, any place I could get my hands on current and old drivers... the tech guys in India even were frequently mounted to my desktop over a period of time in September trying to fix the no audio problem.

There was something inherent in whatever Realtek driver had been auto installed at the end of August that was keeping any re-installation of any new or old audio driver from working.

Needless to say, now I have all the optional updates blocked and I have my auto update in W7 set to only allow me to install the updates, though I know sometimes it still installs some updates behind the scenes and behind my back... thankfully, just not the driver and optional updates.

It was a bit funny because one of the MS techs in India insisted that Windows never auto installed any drivers... I sent him an error panel collage image that I made to convince him otherwise and that's why he ended up ordering me a copy of W7 ULT.

One of the video driver updates for the NVIDIA GeForce drivers got eaten too and would not work correctly... there were all kinds of things going wrong and this computer was not being used nearly as much as it is now with W7.

Now this computer is very, very clean and stable... not one crash in 3 months of using W7, knock on wood... I'm personally amazed at its stability now.

Are you investigating audio driver performance?... someone said that Realtek makes the driver that is in this Windows 7 ULT system software now anyway (but it says it is made by MS in the audio driver properties panel) so it seems that it should do the same things for Audacity that any actual Realtek driver would anyway... that's why I figure that the problem with this desktop recording thing is due to something else in my soundcard or something anyway.

    Thanks,

    digi

And MIKE!... your private messaging is blocked... is there a way to send you the video link that I was going to send to you?

There is a way to do it, upload to a hoster and post the link, but I wouldn't download or open it, so it is a bit pointless really! :)

I don't want any private messages or extra e-mail or anything like that, so they are disabled.

    digiday video link

    Hi Mike,

I already have it posted on YouTube... it is a New Years greeting video card that I made and had already posted on YT for some friends and family on 12/31... but I don't want to post the link in public here.

Do you have an Instant Messenger app?

I am listed for the Yahoo Messenger on this site... or any other messenger would work if you send me a private message and tell me which one... I think even if you have your PM turned off, you can still send me a PM to tell me which IM to use.

I had sent the link for this video to a couple other of the fellows from yesterday too... would like you to see it.

    Instant Messenger

I just checked, and even though I have my Yahoo Instant Messenger handle entered in to my profile info here, it doesn't show up on my profile page under "Send Message"... if you can message that way, I will post my YM handle here, on this thread... then I could Yahoo IM you the link to the video... or via whatever IM you might use.

I did not have this much fun reading support forums in a while. I knew if i keep reading I will find a solution. I used the $quote.
I have VEN_10EC&DEV_0888 card I was not sure if it is Intel, Sigmatel or Realtek
It appears that it should be realtek. I installed the driver and window hd audio magically changed to realtek hd audio and after a reboot it just worked

    Thanks folks

What I think you need to do is......
Download Realtek HD Audio Codec R.256 Realtek

    Hi fartingowl,

I love your name... reminds me of my 4th wife.

    Which one is the $quote?

Sorry I don't know what a VEN_10EC&DEV_0888 card is... is that the new credit card from VISA?

Everyone keeps trying to get me to update or replace my current audio driver, but somewhere, someone said that my problem is probably with my sound board and that a new audio driver wouldn't solve this problem... besides, if you take a few hours and read this entire thread you'll find the part where I say that I wouldn't mess with my working HD audio driver if Holly Madison came over to my place for hors devours... well, maybe for that.

Instead, I have started to physically abuse my PC... it now looks as if it has been on the WWE on the Spike Channel... or is that WWF... or WWII... not sure since I don't watch it... you know, where two buffed-up fighters in swimming trunks end up looking like angry gay Svengali lovers in a round cage?

Thanks for thinking of me though,

i love it too, my kids made up a fartingowl song when we were camping last year.

I $quoted p5bdkw's suggestion to Download Realtek HD Audio Codec R.256

that ugly, visa card like, string is hardware id - you can find it in device manager, device's properties, details, hardware id
VEN_10EC is vendor id 10EC which is realtek, that way I could assume that realtek driver would work.

I would say that you should install it if it is realtek, yeah I know about that Holly Madison thing, but 7 is nothing like vista in many ways.
I would say this would not bring it down, but please dont quote me on this...

    good luck!

OK I think I have found a solution for you that works with audacity and what you have. I have just tried it myself and it works.

How to record what you hear in Windows 7 ?

It simply bypasses the problems you are having ( I hope! :) )

Read the posts at the bottom of the article as well!
