No Audio, HDMI (unplugged), No Audio device listed

    Hi,

I just got a new (cascaded) computer with seemingly no standard audio.

The audio icon is a speaker with and X through it and the only audio device that populates the Playback Devices list is the HDMI digital audio.

I have audio on the motherboard (think I can find it?? nope) and some auxiliary ins and outs on the front of the PC (headphone, line in).

No audio will output whatsoever. Keep in mind I will not be using the HDMI audio.

No headphones and no "X"s in the device manager...

um... any help would be appreciated! Thanks

    Mike

Go to the Control Panel/Hardware and Sound and finally the Sound Panel. What is listed there? The HDMI and Speakers should be listed. If that is the case make the Speakers the default playback device.

If the Speakers are not listed, RIGHT click in a blank area on the panel and check the Show Disabled Devices and Show Disconnected Devices and then if the Speakers are shown you can make them the default playback device.

If there is still no speaker, you can check the Device Manager to see if the sound is listed (could be RealTek or IDT) and if it is check to see if there is an error code,

As this is a new PC and you can't get it working it would be best to contact HP support. If there is some problem only HP can get it corrected under warranty.

    Thanks already

I did what you suggested. The "speakers" are not even listed. Only the Digital HDMI audio output, which is wierd because it's a part of my graphics card which is working fine!

The cpu isn't new it's cascaded (i work at a post-secondary school) it has been reconfigured due to my last motherboard frying on the same PC model.

Check the device manager and it only listed the HDMI sound device. No realtek or anything else of the sort.

I did see under system devices (device manager) that the system speaker is fine however it doesn't make any noise or sound either... straaaaange...

    Any other ideas?

That model number you have listed in your system specs correct? A Google search of it returns a grand total of 2 results, the first is this thread here and some web hosting site and nothing else.

    hmmm good question

i believe so. I quoted the sticker on the tower itself... the entire sticker reads

    HP Compaq ac7700p Convertible Minitower
    dc7700pC/E6300/80hnw/1.0R/4k US

I admit, the first line is a little smudged and now that you mention it... the ac is probably a dc... lol

    Thanks for pointing that out!

That helps a bit. Found three variations of it here,

Search HP US - Search results for 'dc7700pc'

different forms/cases, but all three have Realtek HD for audio (based on the available downloads. First thing to do is double check in the bios that the onboard audio is enabled. I'm assuming you have an AMD or Nvidia card with native audio on it for HDMI use, if so yours wouldn't be the first HP I have seen where when one of those video cards is installed the HP bios also sees it as a sound card being installed and it will auto-disable the onboard audio.

If it is disabled in the bios, grab this,

Latest Realtek HD Audio Driver Version

for the driver for it, as the one from HP is somewhat (more like quite a bit) older than the latest available from Realtek.

    Stormy13

You were right about the bios. Our staff here had the bios locked ...
I enabled the onboard audio and it actually fixed itself. The HP SSM software didn't really do anything (on the surface at least).

Thank you for your time and expertise!
