Device manager find the device and click on un-install. Restart and then plug the device back in. May require an additional restart.

Tried that, when windows assigned a driver it just assigned a basic stereo driver, which was even worse!
Ah bummer. I was hoping maybe a different driver would help. You've been all through the new laptops settings just double checking? Have you tried alternate usb ports? I'm starting to grasp at straws here !
Here's an idea have you checked in your start menu to see if another audio driver is loading as well as the 5.1? If so then maybe there's some conflict.
