    Welcome to the forum!!

Have you checked in the BIOS to make sure that the audio device is indeed turned on? It may not see the device if the bios does not have it on

Did you try the Conexant driver as well? Have to go with the Vista driver whicvh should work, as they don't have one for Windows 7,

HP Pavilion dv9700 Entertainment Notebook PC series - Conexant High-Definition Audio Driver - HP Business Support Center

HP lists a driver for both Realtek and Conexant for that model laptop. If that is what is in yours, would explain why the Realtek driver won't install.

If you haven't yet install the chipset driver for it,

HP Pavilion dv9700 Entertainment Notebook PC series - NVIDIA nForce AR Chipset Driver - HP Business Support Center

If it won't install normally try it again in compatibility mode,

    Compatibility Mode

It may take that in order for the audio to be detected, which if it does then the driver for it should install.

One thing that would help is to know which Nvidia chipset that is in your laptop. Grab this,

CPUID - System & hardware benchmark, monitoring, reporting

and post a screen shot of what it shows on the Mainboard tab please. Hopefully it will show which it is.
