Windows 7: Multiple programs running sound

Multiple programs running sound

Sorry if this has been asked before, I did search but couldnt find anything. I do alot of music recording, mainly guitar tracks. When I was running Windows XP, I could have my DAW (Reaper) running and have my tracks on monitor so I could hear the guitar sound, and I could also have Windows Media player going so I could play along with different songs as I recorded, while using the ASIO4ALL asio driver. With Windows 7, I have been unable to do this, it seems I can only have one program using my soundcard at the time. Is there a way to remedy this?

First thing I would need to know is if your drivers are all jiving with windows 7 properly.
Also is the software fully win 7 compatible?
Have you tried setting the applications for xp compatibility mode?

Compatibility Mode

there is also a way to run windows 7 as xp, that you can try.
Download Windows XP Mode
...that can get a bit complicated to get it up and running properly sometimes though.

I don't use the internal sound card in my PC for recording. I have Sonar X1 and I have a firewire connected 8 channel recording interface (Focusrite Saffire Pro 40) that I use for recording and headphones and studio monitors.

I could record using the internal PC sound card and WMP by connecting the Line Out on my PC to a cannel on the Saffire Pro 40. Enable another track in Sonar and it will also record that track for future use.

The way I usually do it is to import the song to Sonar and then play along with that on another track.

I don't like ASIO4ALL when I tried it for my sound card that does not have ASIO drivers, it has clobbered the ASIO drivers for the Saffire Pro 40 and I had to reinstall both the regular drivers for my sound card and the drivers for the Saffire Pro 40.

Thanks for the responses. Sorry, I should have mentioned these things in my original post. Everything is Windows 7 compatible, as far as I know. The driver downloads say for Windows 7. I usually either record through USB via my guitar processor (Line 6 Pod X3 Live) or connect the L6 through my Presonus firewire interface. I only use the actual soundcard for output to my 5.1 speakers. I'll try the xp compatibility and see if that helps.

Oh, and I do have the exclusive control box in my soundcard properties unchecked, if that makes a difference.

...does the 4850 have hdmi?
If it does you need to go into control panel sound, click the amd hdmi click properties and disable it. That would be causing a conflict.

ASIO4all has problems on Windows 7 systems, although it is supposedly fixed.

ASIO4ALL - Universal ASIO Driver
