    New windows7 system-no sound

I have just set up a brand new Dell computer....xps 8400, windows7 There is no sound coming from the speakers. They are just dell speakers, nothing fancy. I have checked and rechecked everything. They are correctly setup. The volume controls shows that music is playing, but no sound, mute is not on.
This is what is in device manager..
ATI High Def Audio Device (not plugged in)
    Intel (R) Display Audio..speakers-default
    Realtex High Def Audio
This seems to be quite a problem, been checking online for 2 1/2 days now.

I guess I'll have to call dell tech, although I hate to .

Not sure what to do, any help would be appreciated.
    Thx Grannyfox

1 Have you set the speakers to default?
2 I found I had no sound when I was using video accelerator. After I dumped it there has been no problem.

Could that be an XPS8300 and not an 8400? I do a lot of support on the Dell users forum and there is no 8400 listed.

Usually, when the problem you have occurs the "speakers" are not set as the default playback device. Go to the Control Panel/Hardware and Sound and finally the Sound Panel. In the Playback section, set your "speakers" (actually your RealTek sound device) as the Default Playback device. Then click the Configure button and set the correct type of speakers and you can also test the speakers in this panel.

You can also check the sound by connecting a headset to the front panel headset jack.

If you have problems or questions about your new Dell and do not want to call Dell Tech Support (which you must contact for problems that are covered under warranty repair) you can post your questions/problems on the Dell users forum, which like this forum is a users helping users with problems, and users with specific knowledge of the Dell systems. http://en.community.dell.com/

Dell support gets a lot of (justifiable) knocks, but they do fix things.

Thanks for the feedback and that you got it working.
