How do I get automatic audio from pc to tv through hdmi?

I have an Asus x83v laptop and recently upgraded from vista to 7. On vista when I plugged in the hdmi cable the audio and video would automatically go through the tv and back through the pc when unplugged (video would be displayed on both when plugged in). Now since I installed windows 7 only the video goes through automatically and the audio stays on the pc speakers unless i manually change the tv speakers to default in the control panel. How do I set it up to change automatically like it did in vista?

I don't know for sure, but...

Right-click on the speaker icon in the system tray, and select "playback devices" from the popup menu. You'll then get the SOUND window, with playback tab selected by default.

You should see several icons in the presentation, which represent all of the optional outputs for delivering sound... depending on your connections. I would think you need to select the HDMI item as the default, when you have your HDMI cable connection in place. When the HDMI connection is absent, you should select your laptop's speakers/soundcard (whatever it's titled in this presentation) as the default.

Actually, this may be identical in effect to what you're already doing through Control Panel. Probably is.

I don't know why or how this could be set to change automatically, as I don't use HDMI for audio/video output.

Also, assuming you have a Realtek sound chip, have you downloaded and installed the Realtek HD Audio Codec driver from Realtek? The drivers from Microsoft are not the same or as good, although they do work.

Similarly, Realtek has an HDMI Audio driver that should be installed instead of, say, the ATI HDMI audio driver which gets installed by default along with the ATI video graphics driver... if your ASUS laptop includes an ATI graphics chip. Again, it is recommended that you use the Realtek HDMI audio driver.

Using Realtek drivers may solve this "automatic change" issue when you connect or disconnect the HDMI cable... I don't really know. But it can't be wrong to use the current and proper Realtek drivers, if you have Realtek hardware.

Come to think of it...I did have a realtek driver before when it changed automatically and i can't seem to find it anywhere now. Can you tell me how to get it back? The website is kind of confusing to me and i don't know which driver or where to go to install it

Unfortunately, you have to manually switch using Windows 7 from the posts I've read.

Set the HDMI as the Playback Default Device. this way it will switch to it when you plug in the HDMI cable and then switch back to the laptop speakers when you unplug the HDMI cable.
You have to have the HDMI cable plugged in first to set it as the Default.

I do the same with my USB Headsets, set them as Primary so that it switches to them when I plug them in, and switches back when I unplug them.

I have tried this and it does not work. When I unplug the hdmi after setting it to default i still get no audio from my speakers. I still have to manually change it.
