USB headphones work but not speakers

I am running Windows 7 64 bit with an ATI high def audio device and an IDT high def audio CODEC. After plugging my headphones to my USB port and then REMOVING the headphones all my audio players (WMP, WinAmp etc) continue to attempt to use the USB instead of switching back to my external speakers. The USB port appears to be HUNG. What can I do to resolve this?

I forgot.. I'm running on an HP Pavilion dv5 laptop. AND my speakers are working all the while the audio is 'hung'
on the USB post.. you can 'click' the audio level adjuster and get the proper 'click' all the while, but the audio
output devices all are 'directed' towards the USB PORTS.
