Audio stutters with gtalk

Hi,

I am having this really weird problem. Suppose I am watching a movie and a friend of mine decides to message me through google talk. Then for the time that gtalk goes "ting ting" the audio on the movie stutters, and as soon as the gtalk sound stops, it becomes normal. Now this specifically uccurs only with gtalk and gmail. I have played a movie and different music together and nothing happens, they both play normally.

Wonder whats wrong?

Thanks!

Three possible issues
  • driver issues (not that likely if able to have other multiple audio feed at once, bu possible)
  • If you are using x86 apps a x64 app simutaniously (gtalk being x86), can cause conflicts (this of course only applies if Win x64 installed)
  • Most likely candidate in your case is running short of memory. To check this, when noticing these issues, right-click on an empty area of taskbar and open Task Manager. Keep an eye on the memory levels. If running short, you may need to look at upgrading RAM, or as a quick fix, bumping up Virtual Memory.

Don't hesitate to ask if you get stuck

What sound card do you have?

You have 3gb of mem, that is fine.

That all depends on:
  • the write-speed of the RAM (knowing Dell, that could go either way)
  • is he running x86 or x64 (note x64 really should have 4GB min - yes you can slide around that... am running 2GB myself due to be short on pennies, but using both ReadyBoost and an 8GB virtual mem setting to compensate)
  • If running x64, how many x86 utilities are running under the hood before he loads any of his own apps?
Other unknown factors include:
  • Given that Windows 7 is his only listed OS, did he run Windows 7 install as an "upgrade" over the top of Vista - thus ending up the Frankenstein build we've all heard horror stories about
  • Sound-card - embedded??
  • Are all his drivers up to date, as poorly patched drivers will suck up memory
  • ATI have never been that good at supplying drivers for a beta OS - even now AMD is at the helm
  • What browser?? Firefox with too many tabs absolutely drains your memory and system resources
Please don't assume his mem is "fine", when you don't have the full story or incomplete system specs... is a big mistake
