Sound coming from speakers when headphones attached

Hi,

I have the following problem with Dell Inspiron N5010 with Windows 7 Ultimate 64 Bit: When headphones are connected to the headphone jack, the laptop speakers will not disable.

The laptop recognizes headphones (test sounds are coming through) and they can be used for communications, e.g. Skype. The laptop has IDT High Definition Audio CODEC driver's latest version.

On the other hand, sound from softwares and games are coming from the speaker.

According to me, the problem would be that it is not possible to switch headphones as default device in control panel -> sound.
See the Attached pic, even if i click "Default Device" for headphones it does nothing, there is no tickmark even after clicking
Pls Help!

Apparently, This problem was caused after my motherboard and heatsink were replaced by dell service guy due to overheating.

Im having the exact same problem. It is not the headphones. Has anybody found an answer to fix this???

I would just like to say that this problem has still not been fixed and is a massive annoyance. I am on the same laptop (a Dell Inspiron N5010) and I cannot set my headphones to be the Default device no matter what I do. I have tryed trouble-shooting and using FixIt as well as googling the entire net and this is the only thing I could find about it. Can someone please find a way how to fix it because I find it hard to believe how hard it can be to set headphones as the default device when so many others do it with ease.

Muddled Answer

I use headphones (Corsair 1500) on one of my rigs (for gaming). It appears to me that to use them in a particular program they do not have to be default. The program should be coded to detect the headphones and give you a choice of which output dievice you want to use. Software that is not coded (written) to accopmplish this just continues to use your default device.

For instance, I have not tried this but this is what I would expect with say Win Media Player. You would have to set the headphones to the default device and when you call up WinMedia it would play via the default device.

I had the same problem. I tried one thing and it worked fine. Right click on the Volume Control icon in the task bar (right side bottom corner). In the context menu select Sounds. A wizard will open. Select the Playback tab. The list of devices will be shown. In that select Speakers/Headphones option and click on the Properties button. The property window will open. In that set device usage to Dont Use this device(disable) option.

Note that when you do this your internal speakers will be totally disabled and you cannot hear sound without a headphone. Also you can only control the volume through the volume control in your head phones only. At a time you can either work with speakers or your headphones not both.

However if you want the speakers back on then you have to go to the Properties window of Speakers/Headphones again and set the device usage back to Use this device(enable) option.

Kindly let me know if this solved your problem.

Regards
Vaidya

Update by application

The above did not work. However, I was able to change the audio settings on an application by application basis to fix this. Go to the audio settings for your application and select headphones.

In the playback device menu.
Instead of trying to set "Independent (R.T.C.) Headphones" as default device disable it and leave "Speakers / Headphones" as default device.

Maybe the "Speaker Out" Option is enabled on Realtek HD Audio Manager that can be found on the Control Panel.

Sorry for reviving such an old thread, but I would like to know if any of you have found any solution for this problem. It is really annoying to have to disable speaker every time that you want to use the headphones.

Thanks

Sound in headphones and speakers

I was having the same issue. I just changed headphones to a different kind (one that you would normally use in a portable audio device [no microphone]). Its kind of unsatisfying to not hear it in my nice headphones, but I can listen at Starbucks, without complaint.

Hope that this helps those who are frustrated.

I'm having the same problem, HP Pavilion p6680t cannot get headphones to work at all even though when plugged in the 1/4 front headphone jack it is recognized and will even play windows sounds, but no external sound...I have
the driver 6.0.1.6132 it is original and worked until a couple of years ago...I have serious misgivings about trying to update the driver because of the fact that using the current driver if I try and change the number of channels for speaker sound (2.1, 5.1 ect) it literally causes the PC to lock up and BSOD requiring a manual power off and restart. I still have basic speakers as of now so I don't want to make things worse....Realtek HD is a real pain and there are so many others that seem to have the exact same issues.
