No sound through HDMI

I have a Gateway MD78oU laptop and it came with Vista but I upgraded to Windows 7 Ultimate 64. After I upgraded I noticed that I no longer have the option of selecting HDMI as a device playback option.

Im Trying to connect to my TV and have the sound come through the TV but it will on playback from the speakers. When I select SPDIF I get no sound at all.

Video drivers, I thought I would need the audio drivers?

I am also a noob when it comes to these things. I tried to download one and it didnt have any effect at all.

Im not too sure I am getting the right drivers.

I went to the Gateway driver download section and it only has 1 option for audio drivers and no video drivers option at all.

Both of which have the necessary driver for HDMI audio included in the video/VGA driver. The Intel driver has an install Readme in the zip file on how to install the HDMI driver, and the ATI should show it when you install (when installing choose Custom and it will show everything that will be installed, and one of them should be the HDMI audio driver).

There are several parts that I had to do to get this completely fixed on my Gateway DX4820 that would not play audio through the hdmi port to my HDTV. This may work different for you, but these settings worked after a lot of trial and error. We will be installing the original video drivers, but first.....

First, change Windows automatic updates. I have chosen to let me decide when to download and install them and I receive recommended updates the same way I see important updates.

Second, change device installation settings. Check the no box and choose never install driver software from windows update. They will still show up in windows update, but now you will see them and can decide whether or not to download them. This is very important, because every time you install the original drivers, windows will update with the new drivers and stops it from working as soon as you get it working. Leave the icon choice checked if you want it?

Third, I am not sure yet if this is required, but it, in the beginning, it was for me. Disable realtek hdmi audio in device manager. I have re-enabled afterwards and they coexist. I thought that the realtek driver was removing the intel one, but now I think that windows update was actually removing the intel hdmi driver with the new intel update from windows.

Fourth, download the original video drivers from Gateway and make sure you get the correct ones (intel, ati, 32, 64). Install. Restart one or two times. I had to re-install several times because of the automatic updating issue and a couple of the times aero was turned off. It seemed to do best when I did not remove the original drivers first.

Fifth, select and set as default the Intel HDMI device in the audio playback settings.
