    Can't Disable Windows Startup Sound

When I enter the Sound properties and click on the Sounds tab, the check box Play Windows Startup sound is deactivated. The box is checked by default, but I can't uncheck it.

Does anyone know how I can reactivate the check box?

Try changing the Sound Scheme to something different and see if that helps.

I tried that, and unfortunately it didn't work. The box is still deactivated.

Does other sound work OK? Go to the Control Panel/Hardware and Sound and finally Sound. In the Playback panel, your "Speakers" should be set as the Default Playback Device.

open sound recorder in the accessories folder and create a small, silent .wav file. give it a name you recognize and save in the folder with the other windows sounds. Change the startup sound to this .wav file, if you still here a sound it will be under another option title, like, open program.

Is this an administrative account? or a standard user account?

Is there a possibility of someone else locking down features of this account. This is what this looks like.

    Hmmm..

I would not recommend this, but I know it is changeable in the registry. If you are confident in your skills, I can point you to the value. I dont want to mess up your machine though, so I am reluctant to post it.

    Solved!

Hey guys, thanks a bunch for the replies! Thorsen, you gave me the idea to check the registry, and sure enough, that's what was causing the issue!

    Key
    Code:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System
    Value
    Code:
    DisableStartupSound
    Type
    Code:
    REG_DWORD
    Data
    Code:
    1
I deleted the value, and that reactivated the check box, solving my problem! After checking the box, I noticed that another key did the same trick, while leaving the check box activated:

    Key
    Code:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Authentication\LogonUI\BootAnimation
    Value
    Code:
    DisableStartupSound
    Type
    Code:
    REG_DWORD
    Data
    Code:
    1
This key does leave the check box activated in the Sound properties dialog. If the data is set to 1, the startup sound is deactivated. If it is set to 0, the startup sound is activated. I set it to 1, and no startup sound plays, but the checkbox is now "checkable" should I wish to change it in the future!

Again, many thanks to all of you for taking the time to reply!
