Audio comes through h/phones AND speakers

Any idea why when I plug my headphones into my machine the sound still comes out of the speakers?

This PC is a custom built in the sense that I ordered the parts and installed the OS myself - which is 64 bit W7.

    Thanks!!!!!!!

That's generally pretty normal. A PC isn't a pocket radio Mine has always been like that.

That said, a lot depends on your sound drivers. Some drivers may auto mute the speakers while others don't... Or there may be a setting in the driver's control panel that allows you to turn that on or off.

Chances are you're using both the onboard sound and a dedicated sound card.

You need to check your BIOS to see what is enabled.

Certainly, on my computer the speakers are muted when I plug my headphones into the front connection - I just use the onboard sound as I don't have a separate sound card.

Thanks - I checked the BIOS but didnt see any settings for audio. Pls note that this machine was shipped w/out any OS so I had to use a retail disk I had. Thanks -

I am guessing it is a driver issue....or rather lack of one...
