there is no mention in the Acer M3100 specifications that it has 64bit drivers--you may need to install new drivers for 64 bit--see this page for the 'process' to do so--read the section that begins with "Follow the steps to install the Realtek ALC888 High Definition audio driver:"
(the driver download link is about half way down the page) Realtek ALC888 High Definition Audio Driver for Windows 7/Vista/XP - DownloadAtoZ Drivers | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number SALEON model 2.2b OS win7 ultimate 32bit CPU core2 Extreme QX6850-OCd to 3.15 GHz Motherboard ASUS P5G41-M LE Memory 4 GB Graphics Card NVidia 8600 GT Monitor(s) Displays 23" acer PSU 500W Thermaltake Case mini tower Hard Drives one SATA 250GB partitioned equally in half

i am trying to follow those instructions in the link posted above, but everytime i boot windows in safe mode or normally the new hardware wizard immediately starts installing the drivers again and i cant get it to stop. i uninstall the devices, rebot and they're back in the device manager every time. is there a way to disable the new hardware wizard? also does anyone else have suggestions? | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Custom Box OS Windows 7 Professional x64 CPU AMD Phenom II X4 980 Black Edition @ 4.1Ghz Motherboard ECS Elite Group IC780M-A V2.0 Memory 8GB Crucial DDR2 PC5300 Graphics Card Asus Radeon HD 5450 Sound Card On Board Monitor(s) Displays Dual Monitor Setup Keyboard Logitech... With the 6GB installed, go to the Device Manager and see what it shows for status, either an error and code or working properly. The code can help in troubleshooting.
But, in either case, RIGHT click on the entry for the sound and then LEFT click "uninstall". DO NOT click the box to uninstall the drivers. Then restart the PC and note if Windows detects and reinstalls the sound. If it reinstalls, check the status . | My System Specs | | Computer type PC/Desktop System Manufacturer/Model Number My Own Build OS Windows 7, 64 bit Home SP1, Win 8 Pro 64 bit CPU Intel i7 3770 Motherboard Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UD5H Memory 16GB GSkill Ripsaw F3-14900CL9Q-16GBXL Graphics Card Sapphire HD7770 Sound Card RealTek Monitor(s) Displays Viewsonic VA2448 Series 24" LED Screen Resolution 1920X1080 Keyboard Kensington wired Mouse Logitech Wireless PSU Antec High Current Gamer HCG-620M Modular Case Coolermaster HAF XM Cooling Corsair H80 Liquid cooling with aftermarket Nexus quiet fans Hard Drives 240GB Intel 520 SSD for Win 7

That is cheap enough for a sound card, to at least see if will work. May not have all the features such as the System Mixer that is needed to record streaming audio from the internet.
Note that is PCI not PCIe. Many newer PC's only have PCIeX1 expansion slots for items such as sound card. | My System Specs | | Computer type PC/Desktop System Manufacturer/Model Number My Own Build OS Windows 7, 64 bit Home SP1, Win 8 Pro 64 bit CPU Intel i7 3770 Motherboard Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UD5H Memory 16GB GSkill Ripsaw F3-14900CL9Q-16GBXL Graphics Card Sapphire HD7770 Sound Card RealTek Monitor(s) Displays Viewsonic VA2448 Series 24" LED Screen Resolution 1920X1080 Keyboard Kensington wired Mouse Logitech Wireless PSU Antec High Current Gamer HCG-620M Modular Case Coolermaster HAF XM Cooling Corsair H80 Liquid cooling with aftermarket Nexus quiet fans Hard Drives 240GB Intel 520 SSD for Win 7
