Windows 7: What happened to Windows Recorder?

What happened to Windows Recorder?

Here's a remedial question from a Windows 'tard:

Time was I could record any sound that "passed through" my sound card, that is, if it came out my speakers, I could record it using Windows' little Record utility. It was easy to record snippets of movies, for example, that were playing on my CD drive, then make .wav files from them.

That functionality seems to have been lost. Or I'm lost. Probably the latter. Could someone find me? Thank you.

if you are using a laptop, then you will probably have to set the sound card to enabled and default as otherwise it will record the built in mic on a laptop and not the music or whichever you want to record from stereo mix.

Now why do you suppose I don't have Recorder on my PC? It's a Lenovo bought with Windows 7 Home Premium preinstalled, but there's no Sound Recorder in Accessories, nor does a Search turn it up. Is it a Professional-only feature?

Okay, there it is, thanks to xplorer2, which cuts through so much of Windows' BS: it was hiding in System32 as SoundExplorer.exe, which eluded a Search for sound explorer!

And it works as before: even records radio programs as they stream in. No microphone or line input necessary.
