Windows 7: Audio Won't Even Start

Audio Won't Even Start

Hi. I just installed Windows 7 Ultimate and got everything up and running except for my audio. I'm hearing nothing out of my speakers though all of my drivers seem up to date and I'm not getting any errors. It refuses to even start audio playback. I've tried it in multiple programs and songs or audio files just will not start when I press play (video files do though I'm still getting no sound). I'm using an M Audio Delta 2496 card and the drivers are all up to date and I've tried switching to the on board Realtek device but I get the same result (Not sure if those ever worked actually). Any suggestions? Thanks.

Check the Control Panel/Hardware and Sound and finally the Sound Panel. In the Playback section, make sure whatever you want for default playback device, either the MAudio or your on-board audio (speakers) is set as default playback device. Then Right Click what you have selected and then you can click to configure (speaker type) or Test.

(I have a home recording studio using Sonar).

Yeah, I tried that. I have two options for the card ("S\PDIF" & "Line 1/2") and I've tried setting them both as default and testing but nothing still :/.

I should add that I don't see any activity on the volume monitor when I start the tests.

EDIT: Actually I do when "Line 1/2" is the default. I have speakers plugged in to the card through the L/R in channels and the speakers are definitely on and turned up.

Usually if you have the S/PDIF enabled or selected you won't get any analog (speaker) output. I'm not familiar with the MAudio card so I can't say for sure how it really works. The MAudio forum may be a good place to start for support with it. The Official M-Audio User Forums

Figured it out. Though I had disabled the onboard devices from the control panel they were still somehow active. Once I disabled it directly from Device Manager I was able to get audio.

You should disable the on-board in the BIOS. That is the best place to disable it. I've had problems disabling in the Device Manager and sometime later it gets reenabled. Disabling in the BIOS eliminates that problem.
