Audio distortion

Please help.
When I play the radio through the computer, I get a wavering, raspy, echo noise. If I record this, the noise remains on the recording.

But, if I play from the computer DVD RW, I do not get the noise, and if I record I don't get it either.
Thanks for any help.

What model Inspiron?

Exactly how are you "playing the radio"? Is this internet radio? or are you inputting the audio from an external radio to the PC?

How about other audio, other than CD/DVD audio? Are system sounds OK?

More info is needed for someone to try an help you.

I do a lot of support on the Dell users community forum and have never seen this problem posted. I have seen problems with Echo, etc but when that happens it is on everything because "sound enhancements" have been enabled.

Your Radio on AM band will not be hi-fidelity sound and will have inherent noise in the sound. So you hear this noise and this noise will be recorded along with the radio program.

You can expect a good signal from a nearby FM radio station. A FM signal is hi-fidelity and will be clean with very less distortion.

But when you play from a DVD, the signal is purely digital without any noise generated. You get the best audio from a DVD and also the recording sounds better.

This is quite normal behaviour.

Thanks for the replies: I record from a cast iron Sony radio, cir. 1994 model! I never had trouble recording from the radio when I was using XP Sound Recorder. I am using Power Tracks to record now. I looked at all the Sound info such as enhancements and can't figure it out. I have recorded soley from FM. And I miss recording off streaming internet, which I could do with XP; can Windows 7 be called "progress"!?

Try a different recording program and see what happens. Download the free and popular "Audacity" (download the Beta Version which is for Windows 7).
Audacity: Free Audio Editor and Recorder

I have a home recording studio, using Sonar software. I don't have any recording problems in Win 7. Your reported problem is unique.

You still didn't state what model Inspiron you have. I assume it's a desktop????

Have you tried to check for the System Mixer (or may be called Stereo Mixer)? Go to the Device Manager/Hardware and Sound and finally the Sound panel. In the Recording section if the System Mixer (or equivalent) is shown, select it and make it the default playback device. This will allow you to record streaming audio. If it's not shown, RIGHT click in an empty space in the panel and then click the options to show disabled and disconnected devices. If the System Mixer now shows, you can enable it and then select it as the default playback device.

Thanks fireberd for the reply. I live not far from Nashville; always enjoyed going down there but am gettting old and just intend spending the last quarter of my life enjoying the scenery out here in the country. I tried playing classical guitar for 30 yrs. but was only decent at best, nowadays I'll try some JT, Beatles, Dylan etc. for the grandkids and dog, they're the only ones that like my singing, sounds something like a bullfrog in the pond!

I don't know if this will help, Insiron 5.9; 64-bit OS; IP 00359-oem-8992687;I pressed every but i could find on in the Sound feature, with the radio playing through the comupter in case I got luck, but only succeeded in losing all the sound...but I shut down and opened again and that sound was still there. What do you think, what if I just reinstall the OS?
Thanks, Danv
