Big difference between a desktop that has the necessary jacks for 5.1 sound and a laptop that only has a single stereo jack. In the case of your laptop it may have to audio out jacks on the front edge, but they are both stereo jacks for use with two sets of headphones,

Now with that said I have no idea if it is even possible to set them in 5.1 configuration as it would also include having to re-assign the mic jack for use as either the rear or center/sub out. Only way to find that out is to check whatever control panel the driver installed if any, or contact Dell and ask if it is even possible.

Well hold up there......we are saying you can't get 5 or 7 discrete channels a out of a single stereo plug. But this little add on will get you in business !

That's because it's 7.1 ready but works great as well with 5.1 channels. Leave your speakers plugged in and then just attach the usb to the laptop and disconnect to travel.
