"No audio output" after laptop repair - ideas?

I am sorry for posting incomplete information, but I'm trying to help my daughter who is away at college troubleshoot something.

She has a Sony VAIO laptop running Windows 7. A couple weeks ago the CPU fan broke, and the computer started shutting down after short times due to thermal issues. The computer would work fine, but then shut itself down as the CPU and case heated up.

She had that fixed - just had the fan replaced - and got the computer back, but now she gets a message - and I am only going by her hearsay; I can't touch the laptop myself because she's at college - saying there is no audio output device.

My hunch is that in taking the laptop apart and reassembling it to replace the fan, the sound was not reconnected to the MB (if that's even where sound comes from, sorry for the ignorance).

But wondering about other things to try. I'm considering having her uninstall the audio devices from DM, then rebooting and letting it "find" things again. Still though, guessing something got unplugged.

Just had her try the headphones and they don't get her audio either - if this datapoint means anything.
