'Speakers: Not plugged in' issue. No sound from speakers/headphones?

Ok so here is the situation. Yesterday, all of a sudden out of the blue my sound just vanished. I have a DVI connecting from my GTX 560 Ti into my monitor and an audio cable from the motherboard out (green) into the back of the monitor. The sound worked fine like that up until yesterday, in Playback devices it used to have a tick next to Speakers.
Now, in Playback devices there is a red arrow next to the Speakers and it says 'Not plugged in'. There is however, a green tick next to Digital Audio (S/PDIF). When I play music or any other sound the green bars go up and down but I can't hear any sound (I have also tried testing them).
I am unable to right click on Speakers and enable them because they are already enabled, it just says they're not plugged in.

I have tried uninstalling all my Realtek software and all audio drivers in device manager. After a restart I let windows install drivers automatically, after that didn't work I uninstalled the drivers again but this time I installed the audio drivers that came with my motherboard (ASRock gen3 Extreme3 z68) (Which is what I originally had installed) but I ended up getting the exact same problem.
So then I began to hit the forums. Ended up having no luck with that either. Some people resolved the issue by downloading and installing Realtek High Definition Audio Codecs but it didn't solve my problem. I also tried right clicking on several audio devices and updating them (in device manager), they all told me I was up to date.
The only way I am able to get audio into the inbuilt speakers is if I connect the monitor up using a mini hdmi to hdmi converter from my gpu, however the colours look washed out compared to DVI and it still doesn't solve the problem with no sound coming through my headphones. Connecting HDMI straight from the motherboard also has no sound.
The only thing I was playing around with yesterday was some ethernet drivers because I was trying to connect the computer to the internet with ethernet (which didn't work, but I don't care about that anymore). I installed some ethernet drivers from my motherboard cd and I downloaded something from intel online and installed. Now, in device manager, under other devices I have a yellow circle next to Ethernet Controller (I'm not sure if it was there before). Other than that everything seems fine in device manager.
All I want is to be able to connect the audio cable from the back of the motherboard to the monitor and my headphones to either the back or the front IO. (Note: plugging in the audio or headphones at the front of the PC also doesn't work).
The only thing I haven't tried that I can think of is system restore. Problem is the earliest I can restore to is this morning to before a Windows update, a Realtek uninstall and Java install. (I disabled system backup/restore because I have never used it in my life)

Please help, this is driving me mad
