No sound with Windows 7 Home Prem. x64 on Acer Aspire 5742G

Has anyone experienced no sound with Windows 7? Running Home Premium 64 bit on an Acer Aspire 5742G. A bit of a search indicates sound issues when people upgrade to 7 from XP etc, but this laptop came with 7 installed already. And there has been sound...sometimes. But more often than not, just no sound.

Troubleshooting doesn't reveal any problems. Apparently everything is "working correctly". So I suppose it could be a hardware fault. Oh and the volume is turned up and not muted

Still under warranty, so gonna go that route, but just wondering if anyone else may have come across this particular issue - and if so, how'd you fix it? I suppose downloading latest drivers could be a solution.

Does this have an HDMI port? Check the Control Panel/Hardware and Sound and finally the Sound panel playback. Your "Speakers" should be set as the default playback device. If you have HDMI and the HDMI is set that would be why you are not hearing any sound on the PC's speakers. Same way if you have an S/PDIF digital output and it was selected, that would disable any speaker sound.

Could you check if you have any audio installed software that overrides the windows sound config, it should normally be in the notification bar.

If the above does not exist, run devmgmt.msc update and check for issues.
Also check if the latest realtek driver is 6.0.1.6141, if it is try to roll back the driver, and reinstall it.

Hi, thanks a lot for the responses. It's my girlfriend's computer and she took it back to the shop she got it from today, it's still under warranty.
