Record From "What U Hear"!!!

I figured it out woot! I am excited right now haha.

So the reason I could not get my applications to record using the "what u hear" option is because it was hidden and not set as the default device.

It was so simple too

So for anyone having the same issue.

Open recording devices.
Right click and make sure there is a check next to "Show Disabled Devices"
In the list find "What U Hear" right click it and set it as default.

Record your sounds!

I can't believe I didn't figure this out sooner.

I think "what u hear" is in your sound card ... It's not in my onboard Realtek Audio.
Is there a file size limit on "what u hear" ???

I'm using Audacity ...
and I have to enable Stereo Mix for my onboard Audio for Audacity to hear what I'm playing

Yes Stereo Mix is your sound cards version of this. I have Realtek also but mine is disabled since I have the sound blaster card.

This was for people who have the "what u hear" option on sound blaster cards since many of us have had this issue.

Back on xp this was not a problem because you didn't need to touch anything and it worked. So now that you have to enable it no one understood why it wasn't working. And being hidden by default made it a bit more tricky than just seeing it there and enabling it.

I will write a tutorial with images later today when I get back home again.

Yes "what you hear" is a Creative deal and stereo mix is also what my Asus Xonar uses for recording and live music streaming.

Asus got rid of the need to "show disabled devices" with their newest Windows 7 drivers because now "show disabled devices" are enabled by default with the Asus Windows 7 drivers. Maybe Creative needs to do the same.

Sure would be nice. I see no reason to auto hide devices by default. It should always be up to users to remove things like that if they wish at a later time vs just hiding them and making people frustrated.

Not sure if it the Daniel_K pack I am using or Creative did it themselves with the latest driver, but even with both disabled and disconnected devices unchecked in the Windows properties, everything still shows.

Yeah I think it is different for everyone depending on the hardware and how things are configured. But the advice is mainly for people who have trouble not being able to pick up a recording using these options in applications. If the devices show then you still have to enable them and if they are hidden they probably are not enabled.

ok, my 3 paragraph post just disappeared!
here is the condensed version.
"what you hear" device was on my previous install of 7.
the current version gave me a Creative Update from the get go, which included access to Creative Enhancements, that the previous didn't.
but, now "what you hear" is no longer in the recording devices, hidden or not.

i VJ, using Arkaos mainly but many other applications, all of which i used thru "what you hear".

Need more info to help you. What model of creative card do you have installed? What drivers were installed? From a disc or through the creative update application or did the windows updates change them?

These are all important pieces of info that can help determine the cause of your settings being altered.
