You are looking (or starting) in the wrong area. Go to the device manager and see if there is an error (and what the code is, if there is an error). If there is no error and it shows as "working OK", check the Sound Panel, the "speakers" should be set as the default playback device.
If the speakers are set as the default playback device and it shows as working OK in the Device manager, RIGHT click on the entry for the sound in the Device Manager and then LEFT click "Uninstall". DO NOT check the box to uninstall the
drivers. Restart the PC and when Windows starts it should detect and reinstall the sound. This fixes a lot of flakey problems and may fix yours.
