Yes, your both right, I think, it sound very much like a audio driver.
But I'm a bit confused because windows doesn't report any errors.

Yes, this is an onboard soundcard (not too bad) on an ASUS P8H67.
(HD Audio 8 Channel, audio codec Realtek ALC887).

OK, next I'll try to deinstall and reboot... see what happens.

    @Joodoo,

I don't know how you managed to put the screenshot int the text area, I just attached the img under attachements.

Fyi, I deleted all of the audio drivers but it didn't help neither.

Microsoft Device Driver Interface for HD Audio

This should be the driver you need.

    Thanks @rabid moth,
this is a white paper on programming and a reference for the Intel High Definition Audio device driver interface.

Unfortunately this couldn't me help finding any missing(?) driver.

I found a PC that I can get my hands on that is having the same issue. Checking different things now.

    Here's what I did.

I first went to this site, Realtek and downloaded the High Definitions Audio Codecs.

I installed the driver and rebooted. Now when I plug my headphones into her PC I can hear sound. I still don't have a headphone icon though.

This machine is designed for XP Pro. My sound card driver is not supplied on Windows 7 Pro x86 SP1 install media or any other Windows 7 install media. After exaustive searching, the driver had to be extracted from the recovery media supplied by the manufacturer of the computer [talk about proprietary]. I had to run the driver installer .cab under compatibility mode as well as administrator.
As this seems to be a home built machine, try Rabid Moth's suggestion and see what happens.
    Keeping my fingers croosed.:)

Please create a system image in case something runs amok.

Edit: Seems you post images better than I.
    Edit 2:
I have just plugged in my headphones (Wife doesn't want to hear Gregoy Isaacs - Night Nurse), and had to start Sigmatel (my sound card) from the shortcut I had preparedto in Start Menu to operate the headphones.
Just sayin'; somethimes it can be a pickle.

    Wow!
    That was the great hint!!!!

    Thank you all so much!

With the realtek driver I can now configure my audio system in any detail, so I could activate the AC97 Front panel (Headphones/Speaker) and now it works.

Now I wonder of cource why it stopped working?

    Thanks again especially @Rabid Moth!

And a happy new year hopefully with less problems:)
