Here I am again with a strange problem:-(
When I connect my speakers to the Headphones jack at my PC I can't
hear any sound any more.
Win7 pro reports no errors.
When I start from a Ubuntu LiveCD it works fine.
Any Ideas

When you plug in your headphones make sure they are not muted. In the bottom right of the screen click on your speakers icon. Worth a shot especially if they work in Ubuntu.
If that is correct then right click on the icon and then click on 'Volume Control Options' and make surethe settings are correct for your headphones.

The idea is good, often you overlook the simplest things.
This make me realize that the headphone don't show at all
when I click on the speaker.
And under system settings/sound/playback it says for both speakers and Headphones "not plugged in"
although headphones are plugged in.

Sorry. I always start at the simplest and work my way up.
If it works fine while using Ubuntu but not Windows then it probably is a simple setting or a driver update. Go to 'Start' and in the search box type in 'Device Manager'. and see if you have any exclamation marks.
It also may just be a glitch. Enabling and Disabling might help.

No, it's absolutely OK.

You could also try to update the driver. Do the same instructions as above but instead of 'Disabling' right click on the 'Headphones' and then clicking on "Properties'. When the new window opens click on the 'Properties' button. This is also a good place to see if in fact you even have a driver but when this new window opens click the 'Driver' tab at the top.
Now you see the 'Update Driver' so click that and hopefully it will update and get your headphones working.
While you are in these windows, what kind of sound driver is it using? Realtek or something else?
Already done, without success.
Also in the event viewer I couldn't see anything suspicious
Could disable everything which has anything to do with sound once more...
Otherwise I could also contact microsoft
If it works fine in Ubuntu but not Windows it really sounds, no pun intended, like a driver issue. You could always un-install the driver, reboot and let Windows install the driver.
I think Rabid Moth might be on the right path....
It appears from the dialog that there may be an absent or corrupt (proprietary) chipset driver for the onboard soundcard. Windows will undoubtedly install drivers that will get the sound working, but to control advanced configurations, sometimes a visit to the hardware vendor's website or the machine's support website will straighten out the problem.
@ OP:
What exact make and model (if not home-grown) is the machine with headphone issues?
