As the others have stated ... you might have a top notch system but it could still have a faulty part/driver. If you could fill in your system spec in full it would help immensely. :)
In the meantime you could have a looky here audio-editing-software-review but I tend to agree with the others "Audacity" is pretty bullet proof, so maybe you are experiencing some other issues that we could maybe help with

    Life is too short.
    Dump it and try Goldwave
    Best of luck with it.

i do think reason is a bit of an expensive hammer to crack a nut - it's a whole virtual studio, not a wave editor! i'm not even sure if it can edit waves!

it's a bit like suggesting photoshop when all you want to do is a bit of cropping!

    come on, be reasonable!

I've been using Sound Forge software for about 10 years. Sony bought it about 6 years ago, and actually made it better. Very easy to use... and very powerful. around $60

I have a home recording studio with Sonar X1 and Pro Tools MP9, but that is not what the user wants or needs. Audacity should work without problems and does on virtually every other system but this users. In my original response I suggested Goldwave, which someone later also suggested. But, with the Audacity aborts there seems to be some other PC system or software issue that has to be resolved.
