yes.... its listed in the specs.... I'm on a surge of buying a new motherboard as u (dwarf) said to go with Gigabyte... but i want to assure its my ASUS' inbuilt sound problem (listed above)...
It could be either or both. I've no experience with VIA audio (all my systems have used Realtek), so it might be pertinent to see if a VIA audio user can offer any advice.

I doubt this is malware-related : it certainly points to a hardware/driver issue. has the sound ever worked on this system before? At which point did it stop functioning properly?

Have you tried the mundane things like, trying the speakers in the front speaker socket? Trying a headset in the front and back sockets? Trying your speakers in another PC if this is possible?
