    HDMI device in Sound manager

Hello everyone. This is my first post here. Warning...long explanation ahead.

I am in the process of setting up my audio preferences but I'm confused about various aspects of Win7 audio settings in the Device/sound manager.

A little background. My computers are part of a Recording Studio setup, and as such, one of my computers has an Maudio 1010lt audio interface card. As my studio is also an entertainment setup, I began to investigate if Win 7 has some kind of audio "profile" manager, whereby I might be able to select various "devices" or outputs that would AUTOMATICALLY be selected when various applications are started. For instance, when I use my DAW(Reaper), I would like Win 7 to automatically select the Maudio card as the IN/OUT as
the Maudio outputs(8) are connected to a patchbay, and are normalled to be connected to an analog mixer.
However, if I am listening to audio on the net, like Youtube etc, I would like the mobo onboard Stereo(front) outputs to be selected by the OS, as they are connected to a pair of standard computer powered speakers, as I do not want the mixer powered on during regular listening.
And then there is the movie thing. Since my mobo has Stereo, 5.1, and 7.1 as well as S/pdif output jacks,(and input), from what I understand, the S/pdif output must be used for Sound Surround as the onboard Realtec chips decode DVD etc to the S/pdif outputs, which I would like to connect to a SoundSurround reciever, with 5.1 speaker setup, of which the front speakers are used for standard Stereo listening....er...if that makes any sense.

Anyway, as I looked at the Device/Sound manager screen, I saw an "HDMI" device in the list.(see screenshot). Well, I don't have anything in the computer that has an HDMI output. So, I am curious. Can anyone tell me what this "HDMI" device is or what it is referring to?

I have lots of questions regarding this, but I need to solve the HDMI thing first. Once I understand how the Device/Sound manager works, maybe I can figure out some other things without having to ask here. Anyway, here is a screenshot showing the HDMI "device". What is this referring to?

    Thanks for any insight.

ps, now that I've previewed my post, I see the image is pretty blurred. Sorry. The HDMI device is highlighted in Pink.

Fitz welcome to the Seven Forums.

It is possible that the HDMI audio showing is for your video card as the 8800 GT does support audio over HDMI but ony when connected/configured like this,

Guide: 8800GT/9800GT/9800GTX Sound over HDMI (Now including Creative cards)

You can also locate the HDMI device in Device Manager and if present look up the DevID or VenID,

    Hardware Identification

and see what it is attached to there.

One more thing, looking at that screen shot of yours you don't have the Realtek driver installed for the onboard audio, it is currently using the default Windows, which why it is showing as "high definition audio device" instead of as Realtek audio.

OMG!! That was fast! :) You posted before I even uploaded the pics!Ok,

Hmmm, I don't understand the HDMI thing in regards to my 8800. It only has two DVI outputs. Sometimes I get confused about this stuff. How does HDMI relate to my video card? I'll read the link though. Maybe it will explain.

Hmmm, I thought I WAS in the Device Manager. I'm kinda new to Win7, so please excuse my lack of knowledge in regards to this OS. I'm used to XP. In fact, when I go into Control Panel, I don't see the "device manager" per se. Where is it?

Ok, I'll read up on this stuff and get back to you. Still have a ton of questions. Maybe some aren't related to Win 7, but I need to figure them out. Thanks for the quick reply. And btw, I'm trying to complete my daily wifes "honey do" list at the same time I'm replying..hence little delays.

PS. Solving the computer audio is part of an overall project to connect everything to the computers BEFORE I put the back on my computer "isolation" enclosure. The studio wiring is so massive, it required modeling the entire cable diagram in Sketchup prior to hooking everything up. Hence my questions. I have to do this ONE TIME. Once I button this up, it's a PITA to open it again. here is what I mean.

Hope that illustrates the importance of my questions. Thanks again.

Hmmm, I would have thought the Realtek drivers were already in the Mobo drivers. But Ok, Ill check. ...er..on second thought, I bought this computer on ebay, and when shipped it was already assembled. I modded the case, installed a new HD, and reloaded win7. Maybe I need to download the drivers for the EVGA mobo...ya think? Although, I don't know how it would run without the mobo drivers installed. The previous owner did NOT ship the Mobo CD with the computer. Completely forgot about that. Well, looks like one more thing to solve.

Oh, something else just occured to me. The Maudio manual says the card supports Soundsurround. Don't understand yet what that means. I'm wondering if the card accesses the Realtec..um...codecs? chip? other? This stuff is so confusing. And I don't understand what the Realtec chips really control? The Stereo/5.1/7.1 outputs AND the S/pdif outputs too? Otherwise, how would the different channels be sent to the various outputs to connect line level speakers? whew...this is frying my brain...which was already fried last night thinking about it. (sigh)

You want old drivers, get it from EVGA. You want the latest Realtek driver follow the links from here,

Latest Realtek HD Audio Driver Version

As for the video card if you follow the link I posted above about it, you connect the SPDIF header on the video card to the SPDIF header on either the motherboard or sound card if using one, and a DVI-HDMI adapter that should have come with the card Z(a regular DVI-HDMI adapter won't work as it isn't wired/pinned to pass audio).

    Holy moly you are fast.

stormy13, I'm not a computer "techy" type. Mostly just a user. Heck, I hadn't even heard of the Realtek name until last night while doing some research on the DTS stuff. My card came with the system and didn't have any CD's or accessories. The reason I was posting here was I'm thinking about a new GPU just so I could hook up a new HDTV to it. Hence the HDMI thing...good god, all these abbreviations are getting hard to remember too.
you connect the SPDIF header on the video card to the SPDIF header on either the motherboard or sound card if using one
Oh. I was wondering about that. So, would I connect the S/pdif out on the mobo, to the SPDIFf In on the Maudio card first? And then connect the SPDIF output on the soundcard to the SPDIF in on the video card? I wasn't even aware there WAS a SPDIF jack on the 8800!! Learn something new every day!

One other thing. Can I use a standard 75ohm cable with RCA adapters ? That is if they make that sort of adapter. Just trying to save every cent I can. I'm semi retired and on a pretty fixed income. And thanks for all the info...it really helps.
