Line-in recording device gone. Want to record from my external stereo.

I am recording from my stereo to laptop and when i plug it into my laptop, the computer no longer gives me a choice between that input as either microphone or line-in. It used to but I may have set an option not to show that screen. Only microphone is there.

So my problem is how do I get that pop-up screen to show up every time i plug something into my mic input?

The only other recording sound device listed is "Stereo Mix" which produces a horrible feedback sound if I use it.

Any suggestions are appreciated.
