Problem with the "Print Complete" sound

My Windows 7 pro x64 system will not play the "Print Complete" sound after printing a document.

I get the pop-up saying that the print job has completed, just like it did with Win XP. However, the sound is not played.

The sounds applet in control panel has the "Print Complete" sound defined correctly and the Test button plays the sound. So I do not have an audio problem, and the .wav file is not blocked.

I have looked for any options that could control the sound, but have not found any.

Can anyone confirm that this sound actually works on any Win 7 system or is this a problem with the implementation?

The problem, most likely is in the printer application that sounds the "print complete" sound. It's not your PC or your sound card.

When you upgraded to Windows 7, from XP, did you install Windows 7 compatible drivers and applications software for the printer? If not, that is probably the problem. Some sound functions are handled differently in Vista/Windows 7 than they were in XP, thus Vista/Win 7 specific printer software is needed. If there is no Win 7 drivers except for "basic function" drivers built into Windows you will probably never get it to sound.

    Thank you for the reply.

I always thought that the sound was played by the print spooler; independent of any specific printer application/driver.

However, I will check on Win 7 driver updates and post back my results.

Follow up for the "Print Complete" sound problem

I have checked the drivers for the printer and the PDF Print to file virtual printer. Both are Windows 7 64-bit updates, so this seems to be a dead end.

Printing to both printer definitions give a Pop-Up notification and no sound under Windows 7, but give a sound under Windows XP.

The Pop-Up Notification of print completion is controlled by the Print Server. There are check boxes under the "Print Server Properties" > Advanced tab to set notifications for both local and network printers. I have both boxes checked.

I tested this under Windows XP and the same boxes controlled the Pop-Up Notification and the "Print Complete" sound. I would expect Windows 7 to work the same.

Can anyone verify that the "Print Complete" sound ever plays under any Windows 7 configuration?
