Strange problem.
I bought six CDs today. Four ripped perfectly, the other two play sort of jumpy and of course wouldn't rip.
So I tried one of the offending CDs in another machine with xp.
Played perfectly.
Any ideas?
Are those CD's commercial audio CD's or are they something someone made?
Do they have copy protection on them? Some of those are iffy when played on a PC. Win 7 has some "DRM" (Digital Rights Management) that XP does not have and if they are copy protected that MAY be an issue (not that it is the problem, but something to consider).
If it comes to it, you can rip them to the hard drive as wav files in XP and then burn your own Audio CD and then play that or rip it on your Win 7 machine.
Hi, yes they are all commercial retail CDs. I've checked the covers and discs and there is nothing on them to suggest copyright protection.
I have now managed to rip one at 1x speed!

Some problems are related to the optical drive itself. (Brand, dust, failing laser, heat, etc.) Also check to see if you have the correct Region set for the drive if you're using DVDs. (Device Manager > optical drive > Properties > DVD Region tab.) Let the optical drive cool down about 10-15 minutes and try one of the questionable discs again.
Download the free Audiograbber CD Ripping Program (what I use) and see if they will Rip with this program. But, there may be a problem with the drive you are using.

It rips fine with some CDs not on others. One recent one ripped perfectly.
Another which probably pre-dates copyright protection software not only won't rip, but plays slowly and kind of jumps as well, but works fine on my older machine
About the only other thing I can think of is the actual drive. A faster read speed may have something to do with it. The other issue would be a hardware problem with the laser and it doesn't have the needed intensity for some discs and/or not calibrating correctly which would be an internal hardware problem with the drive. The laser is supposed to calibrate (set the intensity) for each disc based on the calibration track on the disc. The first thing the drive does when you load a disc is the laser reads the calibration track and then sets the needed intensity.
The more I think about it, the more I'm inclined to suggest you replace the drive. If it's a drive in a PC under warranty, contact the PC vendor. If it's not in warranty, www.newegg.com is a good place to look for a new drive. They are relatively inexpensive (under $30 for a decent CD/DVD burner drive). Just get the correct interface type, SATA or PATA (IDE). If its a PATA drive, set the device type correctly (most PC's use Cable Select rather than Master/Slave).
