Do you have speakers connected to it? If you do, and it is a driver issue, try running Windows Update to find drivers.

I do not have any speakers connected. but it has speakers built in. I have updated it completely and installed service pack 1. But I cant seem to adjust audio and it doesnt play back audio because its muted and i cant unmute

With some systems, Windows 7 disables the audio device if there are no speakers connected. If you don't have speakers, try plugging headphones into it to see if it is enabled.

This is all assuming the drivers are loaded properly, which you can check in Device Management.

Right-click on computer, choose Properties, then Device Manager. Look to see if the audio device is listed under Sound.

That typically means your sound card is installed, but there's no speaker or headphones attached. If that's the case, then it explains why you can't adjust the volume or unmute....there's nothing to alter the audio output from.
