Music stored on my computer won't play, but youtube works just fine

I like to listen to music when I'm on my computer, but when I try to open music files on my computer (so far the only ones I've tried are .mp3) WMP 12 says it can't open the file. I have also tried itunes and audacity. However, when I try listening to music on youtube, everything works fine. I have the latest realtek audio driver installed. Thanks for your help.

Exactly what is the message when you try to play an MP3? Do you have any wav files that you can try?

Please fill in the My System Specs as it helps us to help you.

Welcome to the forums, theamazingblob. Youtube "works" because it is the browser's Flash plugin that plays the video/music. Not sure about WMP12, but I vaguely recall mp3 not being natively supported in a fresh OS install (I could be wrong, it's been a while since I bothered with WMP).

As fireberd has requested, post the message you get when you try playing an mp3 file.
